    • Habitat for Horses or Lone Star Equine Rescue can also assist. You can check out their web sites or call them. The phone number for Habitat for Horses is (409) 935-0277, and the number for Lone Star Equine Rescue is (817) 439-0412.

    • http://www.habitatforhorses.org/ Reporting Missing Horses in Louisiana Habitat for Horses/Lone Star Equine Rescue will help horse owners from New Orleans and the surrounding area reunite with their lost and missing horses. Owners, whose equines are missing or have been recently sited in the devastated area, should immediately contact the headquarters of HfH/LSER at 409.935.0277. details
    • http://www.lser.org/ As of Wednesday, September 21st, 2005, LSER/HfH members are working to remove our horses slated to be in the path of hurricane Rita. The ranch, located in Galveston County, is under a mandatory evacuation order. 40+ horses are being removed and temporarily relocated to the Travis County Expo Center in Austin to wait out the storm. Additional horses from foster care living in the coastal areas are also due to arrive there over the next few days.
    • All told, we may have over 100 horses at the Expo Center for several days to a week. Until we know how properties fare in the storm, we are unsure of any ongoing or long-term needs.
    • At this time, we need volunteers to help with general horse care duties at the Travis County Expo Center http://www.co.travis.tx.us/exposition_center/default.asp.
    • We are in need of shavings, buckets, mucking equipment and clipboards at this time. Bags of Purina Senior or Strategy are also most welcome since space was at a premium leaving the ranch and large amounts of feed could not be transferred.
    • Horse owners still in need of a place to take their equines, should consult the Horse Gazette's listing of emergency holding facilities: http://www.horsegazette.com/emergency.htm
    • If you need more information, please mailto:info@lser-dot-org or mailto:horses@lser-dot-org or call our main number at 817-439-0412.

Thank you in advance for any help and we especially thank the kind staff at the Travis County Expo Center for their willingness to help with both hurricane Katrina and Rita.

Sincerely,
The Officers, Staff and Members of LSER/HfH

  • 6.) KINSHIP CIRCLE/ARF GRASSROOTS EFFORT FOR ANIMALS OF THE STORM
    • In early September Kinship Circle, a 501c3 animal advocacy organization, and Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) a nonprofit no-kill shelter in Mobile, Alabama, initiated a grassroots effort for the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina. We mobilize veterinarians, vet techs, rescue groups, transport services, trained animal disaster relief workers, and concerned individuals to staging areas and stricken communities throughout Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
    • ARF and Kinship Circle also manage a centralized drop/distribution site for supplies. Items such as food, cages/crates, veterinary medicines, equipment, and much more are delivered and circulated to storm areas in need.
    • The Kinship Circle/ARF effort scouts and reports volunteer opportunities in overlooked communities. In addition, we send volunteers and supplies to areas where organized animal rescue has already been established.

Subject: Pets in Hurricane Katrina

We share your concern for animals and pets affected by Hurricane Katrina and hope the following information is helpful to you.

  • RESCUE
    • FEMA is currently involved in the Hurricane Katrina animal rescue efforts through emergency teams that are being deployed to Alabama, Memphis, Houston, Dallas and New Orleans. Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams are included as part of the National Disaster Medical System and will support pet rescue efforts and provide veterinary medical care for rescue dogs.
    • FEMA is not in a position to grant or withhold permission to enter areas. FEMA has not issued an order that animals could not be taken in evacuations. State and local officials and law enforcement agencies control access to the areas and the evacuation. It is our understanding that Governor Blanco has now allowed animal rescue groups into the New Orleans area. The National Guard will help with animal rescue on the order of local and state authorities. More information is available at http://www.hsus.org/ , and its Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.
    • The HSUS reported on September 8, 2005 that the United States Coast Guard and National Guard troops have begun to allow pets to accompany people who are being evacuated from New Orleans.
    • The HSUS has deployed its Disaster Animal Response Teams to the affected areas for a multi-state animal rescue and recovery effort. If you know of an animal in the affected areas that needs rescue, please call the Humane Society?s Disaster Call Center at 1-800-HUMANE-1. You may also call 888-259-5431.
    • Owners of animals that are trapped inside houses or are on rooftops should call the Humane Society, which will dispatch the information to their teams in the field. Owners can also contact the Louisiana State Veterinarian's Office, which is coordinating information about animals stranded in Louisiana. You may also call 888-773-6489 or e-mail mailto:katrinalostpet@ldaf.louisiana-dot-gov to leave information about the number of animals, species and location. Another resource is the Animal Rescue Command Center, which can be reached at 225-925-3980.
    • If you have animals that are being boarded in any of the veterinary clinics identified at http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu/ , you may call toll free 888-773-6489 for information about your pets.
    • Equine evacuation information is available for horse owners in coastal states by calling Bonnie Clark, Louisiana Horseman's Guide publisher, at (888)784-8760 or (225) 721-1571 or by e-mail at mailto:Bonnie@lahg-dot-net.

  • LOST PETS
    • If you are looking for your lost pet, please note that many shelters across the United States are housing animals affected by Hurricane Katrina. To help in your search, please contact the Louisiana State Veterinarian's Office or the Humane Society who can assist in determining the placement of animals from various locations in the disaster areas.
    • The Animal Emergency Response Network database on http://www.petfinder.com/ is compiling a database of pets rescued and identified as well as reports of missing pets, pets left behind, requests for foster care, offers of foster care and volunteer registration. The website also lists other shelter and hotline information.
    • The following organizations are sheltering pets and helping owners find their lost pets:
    • Please note that animal rescue groups brought many animals from Louisiana to Texas. For more information about animal relocations, please contact the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASCPA) and the Humane Society.
    • Please visit the following websites for more information:

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Sincerely, FEMA Recovery Division
