I have just posted pics, and all the animals will be held over. The shelter will be closing at noon tomorrow, and will be closed Monday. Adoptions were way down this week. Only a few pups and the Calico hold over. Lafayette Animal Aid http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/LA02.html pulled Rocky, the sweet owner surrendered black Lab and I am assuming he will be placed through Labs4Rescue. There are some outstanding animals and they are very, very crowded right now. My favs are the angel teddy bear dog, the Spuds mix, the black Labs, esp. the mix in kennel 12, the poor little brown and black dog dumped in the outside kennel in the cold, and of course, the Heeler. The orange Tabby is awesome and has been held over 2x. And the little 9 mo old Tabby named Miracle owner surrendered at Christmas time...that is just too sad....somebody pull that kitten. Please see if you can make a place for one of these great animals.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

I ran down to the shelter this morning to bring Kim my camera. They euthanized some unadoptable animals this morning, but will not be putting down any adoptables tomorrow. They are closing at noon, so if you want to pull, please do not come in at the last minute. Elmo moved some additional dogs over to have a chance at a Christmas home, and I will post tonight. Several are black Labs, all gorgeous. My favs are the Labs, of course, the beautiful fluffy dog they are listing as a Husky (not sure what it is, looks like a smaller version of a Saint mixed with an Aussie or an Aussie/Northern breed mix....just beautiful and SWEET), the new Heeler mix, and the most fab Bull Terrier mix you have ever seen...the incredible good looks of a Bull Terrier without the oversupply of testosterone. They have him listed as a Rattie. My cat fav is the orange hold over....acts more like a male than a female....in fact had to do a ta ta check because is so sweet and affectionate. They have another Catzilla.....HUGE white cat with gray spots. There is also a cat that I think is an applehead Siamese but it is a dark brown or smoke color...reminds me of a shorthaired Himalayan...but don't know too much about Siamese cats. Everybody healthy stays. And, they are closed Monday. April with LAA pulled sweet Rocky the owner surrender black Lab for placement with Labs4Rescue. Merry Christmas, everybody, and thanks for all you do for the Roicy animals.

Thanks to Debbie for alerting me to this little kid. If we are able to get him out of there, I will make my usual plea for help springing him and holding him until we get a Lafayette to Houston transport. We have several Houston adopters headed to Louisiana for the holidays, so I think hitching a ride for him/her on the way back will be a breeze.

Please let me know if you can help in any way. Thanks!

Caution: Lakeview,NO pets are "rescued" while owners at home

Please be cautious about "rescuing" any animals in Lakeview (http://wikitravel.org/en/New_Orleans/Lakeview_and_Lakefront). I don't know if folks realize that there are families living in Lakeview now with their pets. When these pets are "rescued" and taken from their owners it causes extreme stress, despite the rescuers good intentions.

My brother and his wife and kids are living on Argonne Blvd on generator power. A couple of times a day the kids let the dogs play outside. There is no one else on the block so I don't think their little romps are a concern to anyone. However, yesterday afternoon about 4:00, one dog was "rescued", meaning my nieces cried all night that their dog was missing. Now before we get judgmental responses - why were they outside etc. please consider that living in Lakeview these days is a bit harder - fences are not complete and living quarters are smaller. The dogs are never outside more than about 15-20 minutes and they need the exercise. They would NEVER venture further than a few houses away - mostly they just like to chase each other around the yard.

A couple of other tips -
1. If you hear a generator running and there are cars, the family is home (the dog is not abandoned)
2. A family living on generator power with a second "front door" at the top of the stairs can't hear you knocking on the original front door.
3. An intact wooden front door usually means the door is completely inoperable (swollen shut), walk around to another entrance.
4. Current Lakeview dwellers do not venture out much after dark given the lack of streetlights so any note left outside after that point is not going to be seen.

I know folks mean well but a well nourished dog with tags playing in front of a house with generator running is not abandoned. If you're really concerned, check back again in another 20 minutes. Chances are that by then the dog will be sleeping well on a little girl's pillow.

On a happier note, my nieces report that living back at home is "very cool" and they are thrilled to be back in familiar surroundings.

Was the dog found? Do you know where to search? (Pets) Could be taken to Tylertown or local holding place. Flyers need to be posted all around town or some system devised to let people (rescuers) know not to retrieve pets. Signs need to be on homes and anyplace they can be posted. Make sure dogs have collars on and leave notes or something on collars letting people know owner is home.
