HSUS/AAHA Katrina Pet Wellness Program Offers Free Pet Check-Ups for Displaced Families
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, there are countless pet owner evacuees who are in need of basic veterinary care for their furry friends. To assist those displaced by the storm, The HSUS and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) have joined together to offer easy access to veterinary care.
The HSUS/AAHA Katrina Pet Wellness Program provides financial assistance for basic veterinary wellness checkups of pets displaced by the storm. Managed through the AAHA Helping Pets Fund, the program offers reimbursement to veterinary practices of up to $125 per pet for the following basic treatments:
- Physical examinations
- Vaccinations
- Heartworm medications
- Short-term supply of chronic medications
Program assistance is available only through veterinary practices that are accredited by AAHA. For a complete directory of the more than 2,900 participating AAHA-accredited hospitals, click here.
If you are a hurricane survivor and would like to receive veterinary care for your pet through this program, please review our program guidelines. Available/South Louisiana/Small dogs and puppies

Cross Post Widely
I have posted to my picture trail album the pictures of some really nice rat terriers, all young and in the 10 pound and under range, and some puppies. As with any shelter these dogs are on very limited time. A litter of 3 puppies are very cute and small and sleeping in their food bowl. I didn't take a picture but there is the most beautiful black and white pittie I have ever seen....and extremely friendly and lovable. I really would like to see this pit bull get out (an almost hopeless wish).
I want to take this time to say that I can't remember the last time I got a sick dog from Vermilion. That doesn't mean the dog you get may not be already incubating something that it came it with....but it won't get it there. I have had dogs there for weeks and not even come down with kennel cough. They are so clean and disinfect everything, including the food and water bowls, twice a day. I get most of my dogs from that shelter and it is really nice and they try so hard to help. Please contact them if you can take any of these dogs. Keith at 337-643-3160...7 to 4 7 days a week (Christmas too....can you believe it these people man this shelter 365 days of the year).
I also went to Iberia shelter....I don't go there often because they are difficult to work with...but there were some really nice dogs there too. I could not take any pictures. But these dogs are on very limited time also.
This is what was in Iberia:
great pyr - look in bad shape a great little rattie - maybe 6 pounds a little black cocker - small....either young or very small a pure mini doxie - I have a hold on this one if is it not adopted several beautiful chocolate labs a cute little puppies that the others of the litter were adopted and he was left behind Several other small ratties
If you are interested in any of the dogs at Iberia let me know and I will TRY to get a pic. I will also have to pull for you as they are very funny about that and I don't think they let anyone out of town pull. There is no fee to pull from Iberia. But I have no place to hold - so you would have to meet me in Lafayette the day of the pull if you want any of these dogs. Today is my first day driving and Lafayette is a far as I am allowed to go.
Let's try to save some of these...these ratties are all so adoptable and small.

Some of u remember my dad jim wolf from Ohio. Well he left today for his 3rd trip down to Biloxi,MS. He plans to help where he can for few days then he will be setting up with Gulfport,MS humane society and ARNO(Jane Garrisons group) to transport animals. On his way down he is meeting up with a guy who has a dog that the owners were found yaaaa! And Dad is taking the dog back to the owner. Me and my husband will be going down the 23rd and will be down there for a week. Who else is going down during Christmas? We have a little bit of room if someone would like to go down with us. We live in Central Ohio and either we could pick someone up on the way down or if u can drive to our house then we can leave from there. E-mail if interested.
