NO Cat Found Alive After Three Months

31257 (http://www.nola.com/forums/animals/index.ssf?artid=123197). Wonderful news!!!
by AnnetteDub, 11/29/05 15:46 ET

Wonderful, wonderful news: The owner of Midnight, Barbara Ward (Filmore, Lakeview), was back in New Orleans last week, and found one of her cats alive after three months!!!

See below:

"Shockingly, I found my cat Marmalade alive at my house when I arrived. He was sitting on the front patio waiting for me, alive but scrawny, alive ONLY because my online friends and FTF friends had been leaving food in the area. He ran as soon as the car pulled up and hid in the house. He came out when I called him, and I was just amazed that he was alive after all this time."

Thanks so much for all you have been doing to help Barbara's cats. If it wasn't for you, this little one wouldn't have made it! Thanks!!

We are still Looking for Midnight!!

Best regards,

Annette.

Stealth Volunteer: BIG Petfinder Problem

31263 (http://www.nola.com/forums/animals/index.ssf?artid=123239). BIG Petfinder problem
by lilliesmom, 11/29/05 16:11 ET

Received this email this morning from a Stealth Volunteer:

I just made this discovery tonight and posted this tonight on “stealth volunteers” board I downloaded CSV files for the entire active “lost” and “found” Petfinder entries and started analyzing them. I made a disturbing discovery about a serious database problem:

I posted earlier tonight about the Animal type descriptions on Petfinder. I had no idea of the magnitude of the problem until I started analyzing the excel data I downloaded, and testing in Petfinder. Please, someone, tell me I'm mistaken!

Out of 24771 lost listings in Petfinder, 14720 of them will not come up if you select an animal type other than "all"!!!

That means that there are 14720 records that cannot be searched using the "breed" box, since the database requires that you select an animal type if you enter a breed. The "found" listings are in much better shape--only 29 problem ones there.

To restate, Petfinder gives you 9 preset options for searching specific animal type, (i.e. dog, cat, bird etc.) but 14720 of the active Petfinder records have something other than the standard options Petfinder gives you when you search. You might be searching "Cat", but if they put "2 cats" in that animal type field, it WILL NOT come up.

The workaround would be to ALWAYS use "all" in the animal type box and put the breed info in the keyword box. I am going to retry a WHOLE lot of searches knowing this.

This is a HUGE database problem!! And this also affects the search engine that Donna suggested earlier, since it also requires you to check either "dog" or "cat". How do we get this word out to Petfinder and everyone looking for owners? Please cross-post.

Saint Bernard Resources

If you are not already aware, the Island Business Group has recovered the St. Bernard Parish animal shelter's data from their flooded computers.

Any microchips sold to St. Bernard Parish Government, St. Bernard Parish Animal Control, or St. Bernard Parish Animal Shelter are now accessible. Owners may request a "reverse search" to find their microchip numbers while updating their contact information.

License tags for pets that were adopted through the shelter, pets that were impounded, or pets whose owners purchased them directly from the shelter are also listed. Unfortunately, the majority of licenses were not on computer.

To search this database go to: http://www.islandbusinessgroup.com/stbernard.asp If a match is found, you can click on the link or email the shelter atsbpanimal@aol.com

We are asking that owners whose pets are microchipped or have other searchable identification (a known license or vet hopital tag number, a tattoo, etc.) and are looking for their pets contact Ceily atsbpanimal@aol.com with their current address and telephone numbers. This will be added to the shelter's database so that anyone looking for the owner will be able to find them.

The Los Angeles SPCA Link pictures a group of pets rescued by Camp Lucky that were flown to California for distribution throughout the state. Under each rescued pet photo is a contact telephone number. http://www.spcala.com/hurricanekatrina_animals1.html Additional photos of some of the same pets are listed on the Los Angeles SPCA site.

Pasadena has listed their group separately on their own website. http://www.phsspca.org/about/hurricane/katrina-pets.htm

The temporary animal shelter in Belle Chasse will be closing in a few weeks and there are many extremely nice dogs and cats that need to be adopted. Many of these animals obviously were family pets...they are friendly to people and other animals and very well socialized. Over 8 weeks has been allowed for people to reclaim their pets, but now the unclaimed ones are up for adoption. There are many mixed breed, but also some full breed dogs. The cats are especially nice, with many adult cats with very beautiful markings, and quite a few kittens and adolescent cats. They come in all sizes and colors! There are over 250 animals still needing homes. Please open your heart and your home to true Katrina and Rita "survivors".Adoptions are $40 to cover the cost of the spay or neuter operation. Shots have been given and are free. The temporary shelter is located in Belle Chasse at the intersection of Main St. and F. Edward Hebert Rd. (previously the Senior Citizens Center, 3712 F.Edward Hebert Rd.). The hours for adoptions are M-F 9-4 and Sat, & Sun. 11-2. For questions call 392-9200. PLEASE SPREAD
