PMF Help needed with some Katrina animals

If anyone that can help, please contact Jennifer directly at (678) 770-6515 or mailto:petnet@farsight-dot-biz.

Thanks, Anna, PAL

PLEASE CROSSPOST!!!

Noah's Wish is pulling out today. They are leaving the remaining animals in the hands of Slidell Animal Control. There are 55 dogs and 60 cats left.

AC does NOT have room for them all, and there will be no one at the temporary shelter to care for them. We know what that could mean. What a sad ending that would be to an otherwise inspiring tale of rescue.

The AC officer (very nice) says all these pets are domesticated but were found running at large with no ID tags. No one has shown interest in them, so they are releasing them with no stipulations about putting them on petfinder; they can be adopted out immediately.

We need to get the word out to any rescue groups left out there with any room that these guys need to go into rescue. Some of the dogs ARE pit bulls (surprise, surprise) so an experienced pit group would be a blessing.

There will be NO red tape - as long as the group is a valid 5013C rescue group (preferably with a reference or two) they can pull. This is a chance for some of the smaller rescues that were excluded from helping during the early stages to do a little for the Katrina animals.

For you Atlanta folks, I know Atlanta is overrun right now, so I am not suggesting Atlanta take in any more, but rather hoping you have rescue contacts in other states that might help.

Anyone that can come next week and rescue is welcome to contact me at: 678-770-6515 or: mailto:petnet@farsight-dot-biz (@farsight.biz).

11/18/05: Need For Katrina Fosters Is Ongoing

On a single day, (November 14) Animal Rescue New Orleans saves 13 cats, 17 puppies, and 22 dogs. Multiply that times many days and you can understand our need for space. Each day, rescued animals are transported to the Best Friends shelter in Tylertown, Mississippi. When the Best Friends facility is full, we have nowhere to bring animals.

We currently have more than 3,000 locations in our database where animals have been reported hiding under porches and homes. While our dedicated food/water volunteers continue to sustain animals in and around New Orleans, we can step up humane trapping and shelter with the help of foster organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS TO FOSTER KATRINA ANIMALS:

  • 501c3 NO-KILL Organization
  • Can safely transport animals to your shelter.
  • Will upload each animal¹s identity info/photo on petfinder.com and track them.
  • Agree to hold Katrina animals in foster for a minimum of 3 months.
  • If guardian comes forward during that time, agree to release the animal.
  • Ideal groups can take at least 10 animals.

HOW TO FOSTER KATRINA ANIMAL:

1. Fill out Best Friends forms IMMEDIATELY. They¹re moving quickly through their list of qualified 501c3s due to urgent need. If you¹ve already filled out forms, and meet qualifications above, you will be contacted. If you are an organization who can foster left-behind companion animals http://www.bestfriends.org/HF/FO.cfm If you are an individual who can foster a left-behind companion animal http://www.bestfriends.org/HF/FI.cfm

2. If your organization has worked with JANE GARRISON/DAVID MEYER (Animal Rescue New Orleans) or KINSHIP CIRCLE‹and meets all qualifications above fill out application AND email Kathi McDermott for some priority attention: Kathi McDermott, Community Program Manager, Best Friends Animal Society: mailto:kathim@bestfriends-dot-org

UPDATE FROM THE FIELD

11/16/05: 50 Cats Rescued from Bulldozer Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO) and Alley Cat Allies http://www.alleycatallies.org/ (ACA) rescued 50 cats today from a trailer park in Kenner (near the New Orleans airport). FEMA plans to bulldoze the park in order to put up trailers for displaced Katrina victims. People, many of whom are disabled, are still living at the trailer park, and now face being displaced themselves. They have to be out by Saturday, November 19. The 50 cats rescued today were tame and able to be put in carriers. A total of approximately 100 animals including dogs, bunnies and many more cats are still in need of rescue there.

Please contact FEMA at mailto:FEMAOPA@dhs-dot-gov, (202) 566-1600, and Governor Blanco's office at (866) 366-1121, Fax: (225) 342-7099, and insist that they rescue and provide care for the people and animals currently living at this trailer park.

Alley Cat Allies needs cat caregivers at the base camp in Bogalusa. Please email Bonney Brown if you can help at mailto:bbrown@alleycat-dot-org .

11/18/05: St. Bernard readies wrecking ball
320 buildings get approval for razing
By Karen Turni Bazile
St. Bernard/Plaquemines bureau

The first building demolitions in the wake of Hurricane Katrina's widescale devastation of St. Bernard Parish are expected to begin in about three weeks.

St. Bernard Parish Council members on Tuesday approved a list of 320 buildings to be demolished. Inspectors had deemed each of the buildings to have 100 percent damage from Hurricane Katrina, meaning the damage exceeds the home's pre-Katrina value.

ROICY UPDATE

Date: Fri, 18 Nov 2005 10:24:42 -0600
From: "DH Payne" <dhpayne @cox-internet .com>
Subject: ROICY UPDATE

Another great day....thanks to so many of you.....and many of you very far away.....for caring about the Roicy animals. The place was cleaned out again other than three cats...one huge black cat, one petite black cat, and one Maine Coon mix...and there is room so they are safe for the moment. Pics will be up of the new animals by tonight late. Here is how it shakes out:

One eyed Jack was adopted or rescued before any of us got there....Jenny from the shelter thinks adopted....room full of cats and the one adoption was the special needs cat...love it!!! If you have pledged a donation toward a certain animal's vet bills, or if you are so inclined, please contact these groups. They are going to have HUGE bills as they have all pulled many animals lately from Roicy. The little Spaniel who was left behind and pulled by APAWS at the last minute is in really bad shape....horrible infections in both ears, very high positive heartworm test, raging kennel cough, every parasite known to man...will cost them big bucks. Also, know that Small Animal Rescue has pulled a jillion dogs in the last two weeks, and the Golden is high positive on the heartworm test. Special thanks to Sue of THE CAT RANCH for offering to foster the 4 cats and Tweety until other arrangements can be made.

I am tagging on this email from Rocky Gates who works TIRELESSLY with the Vermillion shelter in Vermillion parish. Rocky just had surgery, and we are going to fuss at her if she does not get off the internet, but she works with them as I do with Roicy. As it stands now, I believe the Springer might be headed for rescue(perhaps she can give us contact info later) and I think the Cocker will be going to Companion Pet Adoptions http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/LA38.html and the Boxer to LA Boxer Rescue http://www.louisianaboxerrescue.com/ That leaves the chocolate Lab pup....any sponsors, LOCAL fosters or rescues out there??? Please email Rocky if you can help.

From Rocky:

I called Vermilion Parish today and these are the dogs I am told are there. I know it is hard for me to tell you about them....and then tell you that I don't have pictures nor can I help pull....but hopefully you could work it out to get them anyway. Due to a recent medical procedure, I can't drive or even ride in a car. So I am doing what I can for these poor dogs. Remember Vermilion has no adoption program, but you may "reclaim" any stray after the 5 days holding at a cost of $40. 337-643-3160 Or contact me and I will see what I can do...which may not be much.

  • There is a beautiful chocolate puppy, female, around 3 months old
  • A Springer Spaniel ....please send this out to the Springer rescue if you know of one.
  • A little buff colored cocker spaniel
  • A male boxer that I am told is very, very pretty.
Please try to help one of these dogs....we are their only hope.

RE: [LouisianaDogCatRescu] ROICY UPDATE

Rocky -

PLEASE do not hesitate to holler if help is needed on ANY cockers as my vet does our vet work (except special order meds and surgeries) totally free of charge. I will be happy to help. We currently have two cocker Katrina kids here - Sydney who was an OTI at Roicy and is both blind, deaf, and 12 years plus and Buffy - emaciated when she came and parasite ridden but clear now and gaining weight steadily and also learning to play with toys - aged 4 to 7 years.....We will be happy to help as needed as we are lining up several folks to foster for us on some of the dogs that are younger and without health problems.....
