Subject: Save cats from bulldozing: Foster or Adopt

Bulldozing threatends cats in Kenner, LA! Foster or adopt cats whose homes are being destroyed!

Today ACA volunteers are at a trailer park in Kenner, Louisiana, near the New Orleans Airport, trying to rescue over 80 cats who have been living there. Residents have been evicted and the area is scheduled to be bulldozed on November 19th.

Volunteer teams arrived with traps Wednesday morning, but were initially kept busy just scooping up friendly cats who came up to them. A total over 50 cats were rescued the first day there!

We need to find no-kill shelters, barn homes and foster homes for these cats from the Kenner trailer park, as well as the over 130 other cats still at the ACA emergency shelter.

Can you help?

Humane groups: If your group might be able to take in a number of New Orleans cats and hold or foster them for one month before adopting them out (people are still looking for their pets), we would love to hear from you.

Individuals: If you have a barn on your property, live in the southern US, and would be willing to relocate two or more New Orleans feral cats to your barn and provide daily food and water, OR If you could provide foster care and/or adopt one or more of the cats rescued from New Orleans. . .

Contact us: We'd love to hear from you! Please e-mail us at mailto:alleycat@alleycat-dot-org and let us know if you are able to help. After hearing from you we'll send you our foster care/adoption application to complete.

Thank you for caring about the cats!

RE: Rabbies vaccinations/volunteers

EVERY SINGLE volunteer that responds to ANY disaster situation in which they are there to help animals MUST have their rabies vaccinations. If they don't, that is just plain old irresponsibility and they have no place is the response efforts. There is no excuse. If you will ever in the future respond to ANYTHING, you MUST get your rabies vaccine series.

Please be aware that with your rabies vax, an animal does not need to be put down for rabies testing, although quarantine is still needed. If bitten, while the animal is in quarantine, you will have your titers done. If needed, a booster will be given. Rabies is INCURABLE and results in DEATH - it is not something to take lightly. The sweetest animals can encounter wild animals during a disaster situation and can become infected.

If you were volunteering with me and did NOT have a pre-exposure rabies vaccine, you would be sent home immediately. I would not care how much you complained about not being utilized when there were not enough volunteers to do the job, nor how much work I have to do to make up for the loss of you. If you can't prepare, you are no different then those pet owners who were not prepared to evacuate with their pets. A person without a pre-exposure rabies vax series has no place in disaster response. Period.

Re: Rabies, tetanus, hepatitis vaccinations/volunteers

Here is some info on the rabies vaccination protocol. Orleans parish requires all pets to be vaccinated yearly, and it's usually with the 3 year vaccine. But you have to assume that the animals haven't been vaccinated, not everyone follows the law here. And considering that my Siberians have caught 2 opossums and tree'd one raccoon in my back yard, the chances of you running into wild animals is 100%. I live in a residential area of Algiers, the Westbank of New Orleans, about 1 block from the MS River. We sustained only wind damages, not the floods of the Eastbank. You'll quickly learn our geographical terminology after a couple of days down here.

This is info from www.cdc.gov/nip/publications/VIS/vis-rabies.pdf (the U.S. Center for Disease Control) Just to give you a rough idea of requirements for rabies vaccines protocol:

  • "The rabies vaccine is made from killed rabies virus, and can be used as a preventive and as a cure after being exposed." In New Orleans, it's best to prevent, then risk exposure. Unfortunately, the protocol for vaccinations takes over a month for full protection:
  • "The pre-exposure schedule is 3 doses given as:
    • Dose 1: As appropriate
    • Dose 2: 7 days after Dose 1
    • Does 3: 21 days or 28 days after Dose 1"

So unless someone can provide you with further dosages, you probably will find it hard to come by. The N.O.F.D., who are also first responders, were all given tetanus shots (one required every 10 years for protection and one even if protected if you sustain a puncture wound of any kind), and they are now going through a series of Hepatitis vaccinations (and no, I don't know if it is A,B,C,D,or E). After the first Hepatitis vaccination, another is given at 1 month, and then I believe 3-6 months later. My husband has only had his second Hepatitis vaccination. The City of N.O. was very slow on protecting its' workers. So Rabies and Hepatitis are all 3 vaccinations given over a different time schedule.

"Any person bitten or exposed to rabies should get 5 doses of rabies vaccine- one dose right away, and additional doses on the 3rd, 7th, 14th and 28th days. They should have a shot of Rabies Immune Globulin at the same time, which gives immediate protection. Any person who has previously been vaccinated should get 2 doses of rabies vaccine - one right away and another on the 3rd day. Rabies Immune Globulin is not needed."

Refer to the above website for more complete directives.

If you will be working in the Gulf Coast or New Orleans disaster zones, you would be wise to bring protective masks, against mold, and heavy work gloves (for moving debris and handling animals). The mold situation is now registering as overly high in the air now and something called the "Katrina cough" has been going around. And it is believed to be caused from exposure (usually prolonged, or in dusty areas) in the disaster areas. Now that houses are being bulldozed, and more workers are in the areas, the death rate is rising. There are several search teams here, with dogs, and they will also be monitoring the bulldozing for human remains.

The temperatures in New Orleans are unseasonably cold here right now, probably down in the mid 30's here tonight, and highs in the 60's during the day, lows in the 40's at night. This might be through Thanksgiving, which is unusual. We very rarely have cold weather here during the winter months.

Hope this info helps those coming down here, help is needed in a whole lot of places. Plaquemines Parish, below Orleans Parish, towards the delta was totally devastated. And help has been very slow in that area. And thanks for the Pit Bull info, the Firefighter has already checked those shelters, but he actually found his 2 others in a photo book at the LASPCA and they were already transferred to other states. He is in the process of trying to get them home.

If I can help with any questions, please email me, anytime.

Re: Rabies, tetanus, hepatitis vaccinations/volunteers

This is not directed at the sender of this mail, just written in general.

The Rabies Vaccine for humans is very, very expensive and is hard to come by. I really don't think that anyone can expect that hundreds of people would be vaccinated for it. The virus itself is really not widespread enough to make it necessary for emergencies like this. I worked at a humane society for a year. A few head employees there were vaccinated but they were the only ones. If a humane society does not require the vaccine, then I really don't think rescue groups should except it from volunteers. Everyone must remember that these are volunteers, not getting paid, giving of their own time and effort. If they are willing to take this chance, then let them have at it. If you want to get the vaccine, your more then welcome to. These animals need help of any kind. Please don't start counting out people for something this tedious.

Kim

I agree, I only provided information about the vaccination schedules. I haven't nor will I have the rabies vaccination, if exposed though, it's a different story. LA isn't a quarantine state like TX used to be. But if someone is requiring rabies vaccines to be able to work down here, then they won't have many volunteers. And I think that most of us can kind of distinguish dogs or cats that might be rabid (hopefully none!!). The tetanus vaccine is a good one to keep current anyway, and hepatitis, well, my 17 y/o son and 53 y/o husband have been vaccinated, but not me. Don't plan on getting that one either.

Just be very careful when you are here, work in groups, especially in the disaster areas. We're just thankful that you are coming here and helping, it's a very sad situation here. And I can't thank enough of our military for their presence in New Orleans. I think they may be here for a while.

Hi

I'm new to this list, but probably known to a few already here. I had to grin at the questions for St. Bernard Parish residents: someone sure knows St. Bernard, and everyone knows that the good ole home-style cookin' came from "Rocky and Carlos", and they finally gave their customers food poisoning a few years back. Can't believe it didn't happen before then, but their stuffed bell peppers that day, did a lot of folks in...

Re: still looking for Pit bull, and it might be a puppy. One of my husband's firefighters (New Orleans Fire Dept.) worked through Katrina with him in the Westbank Command Center, left his 3 Pit bulls at home, in good ole New Orleans East, and he flooded, and he was just recently united with 2 of the 3 dogs. It is truly a miracle that he found them with the little bit of ID he had on them. Since they are all he has left, if someone could give me a contact phone number, I will pass it on to him. He isn't internet savvy, and is living out of fire quarters right now, and the internet dial-up is awful. I've been looking for him online, but Pit bulls rule here in New Orleans, so it is a difficult search. I can reach him on his shift beginning at 7 am tomorrow, Thurs., through 7 am Fri. His life would be complete if he could locate his last PB. Thanks for posting, I'll try to fill out the Lost Dog Report for him and submit it, but he is really looking hard for the last of his dogs.

I want to personally thank each and everyone of you who have given so much of your time, energy and funds, to help us out down here. My breed is Siberian Huskies, but I love them all. And what y'all have accomplished, and the number of animals rescued is certainly unprecedented. New Orleans is 'the' test tube catastrophe, and while it's not going well in other departments, the animal rescue is. Thank you to all, from the people who walk the streets that look like they are covered in volcanic ash and debris, to the people that take time just to pet a dog, cuddle a cat, and "handle" (not my specialty) the reptiles. My van smells like French fries, its the open bags of dog and cat food, that I keep for the strays I see as I'm about town. Y'all were ready and waiting for the city to open up, while our own city couldn't take care of their own. I'm proud to have met some of you, but to those I have, Husky Hugs to all.

Urgent Need For Blankets For The Animals And Coats For The Resuers

Hey guys,

As you well know by now, NOLA got flooded and many lost everything. MUTTSHACK search and rescue is still down there and have taken some of our Roicy dogs as well. There is an urgent need for clean blankets for the animals and warm clothing for the volunteers. Karen is trying to come tomorrow to get the remaining dogs. If you are in Lafayette and could bring to Roicy for Karen, please help. IF you are in the New Orleans area please bring down to their staging area, or email me and i will put you in touch with Karen.
