Help needed for TNR in Ruston, LA

Editors note: TNR = Trap-Neuter-Return/Release (feral cats)

From: Gloria Freeman <gaf @softdisk .com>
Subject: Help needed for TNR in Ruston, LA

I received this message for help. Anybody in the area that can help?

Gloria

We have received a desperate plea for help from a lady in Ruston who is currently feeding 2 feral cat colonies of approx. 60 or more cats. She says people are dumping off cats at that site almost on a daily basis.

Best Friends does not have any network members in that area and I have not been able to locate any local feral cat groups. Do you have any resources or volunteers in the area that might be able to start a TNR program for these cats?

Thanks for any help or suggestions. The situation is truly desperate, since the cats are multiplying out of control.

ROICY PICS ARE UP...DEADLINE THURSDAY, NOV. 17 5 PM

PERMISSION TO CROSSPOST!

Roicy pics are up... please take a look and see if you can help anybody. Adoptions will be down due to the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, so please get the word out about these great animals. Unless held over, deadline will be Thursday, Nov. 17 5 PM, with PTS Friday morning. Thanks to Grassroots Rescue and Muttshack, with transport by Karen, EVERYBODY got out yesterday.

As always, I make a plea for the Labs... hard to get them out and they are such great dogs. The cats are tough to get out, also, and we have a wonderful group this week... these are some incredible cats. Please make a special effort to get the word out about the owner surrenders...they are the saddest...these animals are heartbroken and deserve better than they have gotten.

Closure: Slidell - Noah's Wish

Subject: Slidell - Noah's Wish

I was in Slidell yesterday and today and with Noah's Wish coordinator Tammy. They only have around 35 dogs according to Noah's Wish folks that may go to the old shelter. I am trying to pull 3 rotties. I don't know what dogs they are taking with them yet. They are run over with pitts. We took 4 Friday and a sweet pitt female was adopted out today. Any dog or cat that is not taken by Noah's Wish will be placed at the old shelter. They are going to call me if they need help with any of these.

The shelter will most likely not be open to the public for 2 weeks. I am going back down on Thursday to see what they need. They were looking for foster homes for the "owned" dogs. Two of the rotties I am trying to pull or foster are owned but they can't get in touch wtih the owners and won't let the dogs go until they leave. As soon as they go to the shelter I will pull them.

Re: Fwd: URGENT plea from New Orleans

Hi Laura,

I'm sure you are probably swamped with emails in reply to your email below. I remember your name, but not your face, however I'm sure I've met you at some point during my five weeks volunteering at Lamar Dixon. I am a member of a 26 year old Baton Rouge shelter, Capital Area Animal Welfare Society, who offered our volunteers for nearly 6 weeks, as well as desperately needed supplies during the first 2-3 weeks at Lamar Dixon., and continue doing so in New Orleans.

First, I want to stress that although the LASPCA and HSUS have been criticized for the mishandling of this disaster, to which I must agree, having witnessed, first hand, the confusion and disorganization at Lamar, I've spoken in your defense, emphasizing the fact that the world has never experienced, nor been prepared for, an animal disaster of this magnitude. I remain neutral and will help any organization with genuine humane goals. Since Lamar closed on Oct. 10, I, along with my team, have concentrated on search/rescue, trapping and food/water drops--coordinating our efforts among several groups, and we would like to continue doing so. We have included LASPCA food drop locations in our routes.

I have not heard of the "false reports to test the response time of the SPCA officers. This is inexcusable -- we are quickly running out of time to save these animals. This is a waste of time for animal control as well as the rescue group. We should join together for the benefit of the animals and not allow personal opinions or suspicions interfere with our goal.

In regards to the number of displaced and homeless pets--hundreds? Definitely yes. Thousands? Perhaps. I have seen them roaming streets, fields and parks, hiding in and under abandoned houses and rubble, and sitting on porches and in driveways, as if waiting for the return of their owners. They come to me, hungry, thirsty, craving companionship, yet they lack the trust to allow me to touch them.

I was immensely disturbed by the announcement that animal rescue operations had ended, and out-of-state veterinarians and volunteers were asked to leave. The origination and enforcement of such an order, at this critical period, is primal and inhumane, an injustice to the animals, and a scandalous disgrace, as well as an embarrassment, to our already crippled state. We have much needed animal rescue groups already in place, working successfully--assisting in search/rescue missions, food/water drops, sheltering animals, chipping, tagging, vaccinating, photographing, providing medical care, and shipping animals to other shelters--all at no cost to our state. The local SPCA may be "up and running," however these are not normal circumstances. The local animal control does not have the staff, shelter space, the funds, nor the database and alliance of the shelters willing and eager to help us out. I'm aware that these shelters' space is limited, especially for cats, however, openings are constantly appearing as animals are adopted out.

We have a window of opportunity to get this situation under control, to get the animals off the streets, into shelters, to help the animals dying of dehydration and starvation. We must do so before springtime breeding season, when the homeless pet overpopulation problem in New Orleans becomes out of control. In order to accomplish this, we must accept all resources available now, charitable contributions of volunteers and services, regardless of personal differences, past resentments or perhaps control issues. It is the greatest opportunity for life for these displaced pets, and the best opportunity for reunions with owners. I believe it is extremely important that we accept out-of-state, as well as out-of-country assistance and not "burn our bridges" by rudely refusing their assistance and asking that they leave, before the job is complete. A massive spay/neuter program is crucial in the New Orleans area. If out-of-state veterinarians are willing to offer their services free of charge, we should take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This will not infringe on local clinics since these are displaced homeless pets who would otherwise never have received these services.

My ultimate goal is to benefit the animals displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We are all, hopefully, in this endeavor for the same reason---for the sake of the displaced and homeless pets who managed to survive the storm, the floods and over two months of hunger and thirst. They have remarkable determination, a ceaseless will to live, and they deserve a chance for a safe and happy life. We are their only hope.

Note: Because of my experience in practically every phase of this animal effort (and struggle,) I believe it to be beneficial to the cause, to at least have my input considered by a planning committee, in constructing a policy of organized regulations to be followed and monitored, state-wide, preferably nation-wide, in any future animal disasters, should such a committee transpire.

EMERGENCY:PETS UNDER BILOXI HOUSES BEING BULLDOZED/no help in city

I receive this email today. I do not know if it is true.

URGENT: ... please help or forward immediately! Time is running out for these pets! THIS MAN THINKS HE CAN GET SOME PETS IN HIS TRUCK BUT HAS NOWHERE TO TAKE THEM.

My name is Laura Lassiter. Received a plea for help. Information listed below. Am in Fl doing rescues from Wilma. Please help if you can or post. This man volunteered in NO and is now in Biloxi by himself doing rescues.

Man's name is Jim Wolf. Cell # is 937-539-3838. The dogs are in Biloxi. Says signs are down, so he will get exact location. He is leaving Wed. and won't be back. Says it is really bad down there. Doesn't have any more money for supplies and no one to help. Everyone down there trying to get food for themselves. No FEMA, no nothing except Salvation Army when they have stuff. Need food for dogs, about 50 hiding under homes that they are starting to bulldoze, very friendly and someone to feed. Area deserted.

Jim says he is staying at an econo lodge in Hattisburg. Gets on Hwy. 49 W to I10 towards Biloxi. Gets off on Division Exit (he thinks-no signs) turns left and goes to Holly St. Very URGENT as the contractors are bulldozing these homes. No one to help the remaining animals under homes. Come for food when they hear his diesel truck. Has been paying out of his pocket. Hiding from contractors. Says contractors don't care and are running short on patience.

Thank you for your help.
