Murphy Oil Spill in St. Bernard

Date: Sun, 13 Nov 2005 11:26:52 -0500

Subject: Murphy Oil Spill in St. Bernard

In The Gambit Weekly, about the Murphy Oil Spill in St. Bernard Parish. Discussion of the Murphy Oil spill and long-term effects. http://www.bestofneworleans.com/dispatch/current/news_feat.php

As one resident, who lost a lung to cancer says, "there are 17 people on my street either died from cancer, died with cancer, or have cancer right now." It isn't going to get any better with the spill. As I have suspected all along, those of us that pulled dogs from flood waters and/or St. Bernard need to watch these dogs for cancer in the long term. Two Chows I pulled (found in Chalmette) came in with fur caked in tar and one with hair loss on his stomach which I suspect came from chemicals.

Subject: Ripley's Believe It or not!!! A nightly update!!!!

Well, we distributed 400 bags of feed today and I am whipped!!! Suffering all night with an earache, I haven't been the best of booger bears today!!! But I am looking forward to see Laura, Ingrid, and Sarah from North Carolina. They will be here later tonight and Kevin and Jenn will be here in the morning with my 2nd load from Shreveport. A few of the farmers had sold all of their cows but for the most part the cattlemen are trying to hang on. Rye grass will not come up...there has been no rain so as soon as it comes up and the sun shines on it, its burnt. So that is not an option at this time. It's still hay and feed runs. I have a chance to get hay donated from South Carolina...about 330 round bales, but I need transport. Anyone got some ideas for me on that one, please let me know.

There are still rumors going around about the starving horses in Plaquemine Parish. The horses are not starving. These are the horses under Lori's control there. She feeds every day. I really wish people would stop internet rumors!!! It's very agitating to those of us out there working our butts off to get a handle on these things. What Lori needs is just physical help to get this stuff done that she needs done. Now if anyone wants to volunteer for that, it would be nice. So instead of pushing buttons and starting all out panic, please push buttons for physical help for her!!!I, however, will be going to Mississippi Thanksgiving weekend, and if it calms everyone down, I will go there. Just let me know if that is a request or if it is needed.

On another note, I would like to put out a Thanksgiving plea for help. I would like to do a Thanksgiving convoy here to my POD. Look around you. You are all blessed in one way or another. Can you find it in your hearts and wallets to hit up friends and feed stores and go with me to make this a special Thanksgiving for these people. They need us to help them. That is my first request tonight.

The second request is as follows. I have 630 people on my email list and I am asking you all to crosspost for me to every one of your people on your list. If everyone can reach deep and send me $10. each, I am trying to calculate what it will take me to get them through the winter. If you can commit to send me $10. a month for the next 4 months, we can do this !!! But I can't do it without you!!! This has to be OUR committment to the people and animals. Not just mine. We have to all work as a team. I don't think I am asking for too much, and like I said, these people need to be able to get help to get through the winter and holidays. Can you imagine how they are going to feel about the holidays going through all they are going through. We are truly blessed people, so please let me know who can commit.

As you can probably tell from my email tones today, I really am not feeling well from the ear infection and winds were high here today. Even with cotton in my ear, you could still feel it. Nothing worse than an earache or a invalid internet rumor to make someone have a bad night. Though I still love you all, and God Bless you all for all you do!

I will email more tomorrow and hope to get a ton of committments for the Thanksgiving convoy!!! The time will have to be changed for that run because I also have to go to Picayune, MS early that day so we will all be meeting at the Lafayette Location.

More updates tomorrow..
Love,
Debra
