IMPORTANT HEARTWORM ANNOUNCEMENT:
Hurricane Heartworm Treatment ProgramSince Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf coast, over 8,000 animals have been rescued and triaged in local facilities. Over 200 shelters like yours have taken in these animals and it's estimated that up to 80% are heartworm positive.
We understand the predicament this leaves you with. You want to get these animals adopted out, but can't do so without a clean bill of health. To help, we are pleased to announce the Hurricane Heartworm Treatment Program. The AAHA Helping Pets Fund has accepted grants from the Humane Society of the United States, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of Greater Miami & Adopt-A-Pet to treat heartworm-positive shelter animals.
This new program, which starts November 4th, involves over 200 participating shelters, including yours. If you have a heartworm-positive animal in your shelter, you can contact a veterinary practice that is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association. They will have access to up to $500 per patient for heartworm treatment. The treatment must be done through AAHA-accredited practices. There is no limit on the number of animals the practice can be reimbursed for. What to do.
Contact your local AAHA-accredited veterinary practice to seek treatment for the animal(s). They have been informed about this program. To search for an AAHA-accredited practice in your area, go to the Hospital Locator at http://www.aahanet.org/ .
You must certify that the dog or cat was displaced by the recent hurricanes.
All eligible animals must be accompanied by an Official Certificate of Eligibility and Application Form, which is partially completed and signed by an official shelter representative. A copy of the certificate is attached or you can go to http://www.aahahelpingpets.org/ to download a copy.
