For those of you who have lost your pets during Hurricane Katrina, here is a list of suggestions and resources to help you get started on the search for your best friend.
Try to return to your home yourself to recover your pet. Rescuers are working at full capacity, but unable to reach all the animals in need. This way, you will know if your animals have been rescued. Some rescuers have been leaving notices on the door which will help you know who to call or where to go.
We encourage you to go to http://disaster.petfinder.org/emergency and search the list of FOUND animals. Many animal agencies and individuals are posting animals that have been lost or found to this website. The database changes often, so check it frequently. The descriptions of rescued pets posted on Petfinder are incomplete and in many cases, the photos are poor. Rescuers are doing their best to keep up with the volume of animals coming to them which need to be photographed, described, and posted to the website.
If you are able, we strongly urge you to visit shelters to look for your animals as soon as possible. Some animals are being moved to shelters out of state, as space is a critical need. So, if at all possible, it is important that you or your family go to the shelters in person to locate your pet. It is difficult to reach these shelters by phone. A shelter listing and the locations of most of the animals there is provided below.

Tylertown Help Still Needed
Date: Sun, 6 Nov 2005 02:21:10 EST From: ksarahsmals @aol .com Subject: TYLERTOWN HELP STILL NEEDED
Message 2 in Discussion
Tylertown is desperate for volunteers. They have 4 people caring for 80 dogs, at the moment. Only thing is you have to be willing to take care of dogs, possibly without being able to rescue. They actually turned 4 dogs away that WD brought them. They're not accepting any more because they don't have the people to take care of them. They don't want the quality of care to suffer. I believe she said they had about 30 pits.
Understand that if we can't care for the dogs already rescued, the thousands remaining running the streets cannot be rescued.
If you can go and help: mailto:susankiwikiwi@hotmail-dot-com
Pets Being Killed In Nebraska And Other Areas
Date: Sun, 6 Nov 2005 02:17:49 EST From: ksarahsmals @aol .com Subject: PETS BEING KILLED IN NEBRASKA AND OTHER AREAS
I witness first hand how a shelter in the Texas area is totally mislabeling animals from the storms, whether strays from Rita or Owner Turn Ins from Katrina. There was no one in that control facilty which covers masses of counties that has a clue on "animal behavior" and causes.. One of my own adoptees was due to die for being snappy at everyone, heck! I would too! Just been through storm, hungry, thrown in with about 5 other unknown dogs and she is just 5 months, so the animal control facility deemed her aggressive, and would of euthanized her until I said like HECK YOU ARE.. I immediately got her out and she is fine as can be after one month in safety with me.
I could tell you of so called Feral Cats, that were not FERAL, only traumatized, and striking out in fear, of course they too, are normal acting now... I spent from Oct. 6th through the 19th, cleaning out a control facility of animals slated for euthanization, and I can tell you and others can to, that these are wonderful animals, need change of space and stability and a little time is all...
I hate to say it, but who ever trains these shelter or animal control people, need to do courses in BEHAVORISM for all staff.... Many are dieing for being labeled wrong, very wrong! AND AT TIMES FOR JUST LOOKING LIKE AN AGGRESSIVE ANIMAL, NO KIDDING!... Somehow I plan on making everyone aware of the facts and the going ons at that one particular place, and try like HECK to get it to STOP!.... NOT TO MENTION, That I found a sweet and the only altered dog there, with collar and tags from a local NO KILL SHELTER, SO I ASK WHY WAS HE NOT SEND BACK TO THE LOCAL AND ONLY "NO KILL SHELTER'... I am sure no one checked the tags and if so, CARED! KILLING IS THEIR GAME, seems to me.... I will not give up on any of these animals that have been victims of these storms in all states, no matter how or why they ended up in the system.

New Orleans, from Karen O'Toole

Hi,
My ship had a blackout and the internet went down. Haven't had the time to get online anyway, too busy getting arrested. :)
You can all help me out -- please forward this e-mail to everyone who has volunteered in N.O., or plans on volunteering in N.O...
First of all, I am in St Bernard Parrish right now, not Orleans Parrish (Parrish just means county for those wondering.) However, I have lived and worked on the streets of New Orleans for 7 weeks, starting out with the boat rescue phase. I.e., I've been here long enough to know who's who and what's going on.
I have incredible resources in N.O. with the police, military and certain decision makers. I have spread the word to many volunteers now here and tried to spread the word to many more. My goal is to get everyone in the loop so everyone can USE these resources.
I have gone down to Magazine Street many times and told them about the various assistance available and the locations. I have even brought one of their organizers to the location nearest Magazine St and guided them through, even intrioduced them to the head people operationg these facilities. (For example, free laundry, three meals a day, medical and shower facilitties only 5 blocks away, behind the convention center.) I thought that would solve the problem, however, due to their busy schedules, the basic problems of communication down here and many other factors, I am finding their volunteers who are STILL paying for their own food, sleeping in their cars, worrying about immunizations, etc. Apparenlty, even though I asked this to be announced in their morning meeting -- they have never had the time to do this.
For New Orleans (and I'll get to St Bernard Parrish in a sec.) go to the end of the Convention Center, the highest letter (I think it's "H") which will dead end into Henderson St. Make a left off Convention Center Drive onto Henderson and on the immediate left, you will see green military tents inside the Convention Center, go to Charity Hospital inside for free medical. Just past this entrance also on your left is a military check point. This is directly behind the building. Show photo I.D., tell them you're animal rescue and you can eat there, 3 meals a day. Up on your right, on Henderson, past this check point, is an entrance to the free laundry and shower facilities. These are privately owned and the companies are doing us a favor to let us use their laundry and showers, we are costing them money as they are not paid for animal rescue, so please play nice.
Now, St. Bernard. The city is great, the animals are here, yet the volunteers have me on the verge of getting arrested. STOP COMING TO FEMA WITHOUT GIVING ME YOUR NAME!!!
I've only been in St Bernard Parrish for a week. I live on a boat here (I was on the cruise ship but got booted when they found a kitten in my room.) I am now on a 1,000' merchant marine ship. Scary looking. The point is I HAVE A PLACE TO STAY. I could have easily left it at that and let everybody worry about themselves, but... (The saying "No good deed goes unpunished," definately applies here!) I arranged with Fema to let animal rescue people into their tents. The city and Fema didn't want this. The attitude was, let them come in during the day and they can leave at night...
Long story short, I promised them I would keep track of the people, verify who they were and know their names and dates here. No big deal -- except people were being sent here without letting me know. The guards were suddenly seeing animal rescue people and assuming they were with me. They check in, no problem for them, then I'm asked who they are. I DON'T KNOW who they are. They either weren't told to use my name, or could care less. My name is not a cute "password." This is not some "after hours" club where you have to know the "secret code" to get in. It was a favor and has to do with finances (it costs $35.00 a day for each person signed in getting free food and lodging) and security.
They were letting people in because I made a deal and assured them I would wrangle the animal rescue people. Again -- they would rather we just left the parrish at night. St Bernard is very locked up. Very strick. Animal rescue people can move around at night, go in and out of houses, avoid curfew -- we are a secirtiy nightmare. But they agreed to work with us.
Easy? No! Today there 66 people registered under "animal rescue" and I am being asked who they are... if they are still here... when they checked out... who checked out. I can't anser these questions. It's like I opened the door for you guys and then you.... nevermind. But at the cost of $35.00 a day per person, I bet half these people aren't even still here. I have a list of 66 names i'm suppossed to sort out. Basically, I'm fucked and basically -- it's gonna cost everybody their lodging.
I was almost arressted today as they feel these are all people i don't know, can't vouge for and can't locate and for all they know they're "stealing animals" from this community, animals which will never be put online and never find their owners.
I assured them when I got the tent opened to us that I would take care of this and have their names -- was it so hard for people to check in with me? You got free food, lodging, showers, many got free gas, laundry, etc...
I have to stop writing now -- I'm in a military HQ and they need this computer back.
To end quickly, let everyone know the Fema tent is now closed temporarily, till I can find out who these people are and when they left. If they are here now... I have to find them, if they left, i need to know when. If you know these people have them call me at 602-549-1115 and let me know their dates here.
Gotta go....
Karen.
