Still need help...

I've been handing out flyers. If there are any other reputable groups/shelters in the hurricane area still working please let me know what information you have on them (contact, mailing address, items needed), so we can keep spreading the word.

I know most of you, like me, are already tapped out from the donations we've already made, but we can share this information with others, our offline friends, family, neighbors, to hopefully gain more support. I've put flyers at my sister's bookstore, and placed them in mailboxes in my neighborhood. It's fairly simple and inexpensive to do!

Update on Dogs In South Louisiana/Vermilion Parish

Permission to Cross Post.

I went to get pic of the dogs today.

The two little chi mixes are going to a local rescue (Baton Rouge). I found a foster for the fluffy puppy...it is probably a little scotty terrier mix.

The cocker spaniel was "reclaimed" by a couple while I was there.

Still there are the patterdale....such a cute little guy too.

A little beagle/mutt looking dog around 15 pounds.

The dobe.... who is beautiful.... I don't have a firm commitment on him from anyone yet. This boy is red and tan/docked ear and tail/probably around 2 years old. Very friendly. He is supposed to be housebroken. He has some type of scaring on his back that I am not sure what to make off....almost looks like he was skinned in several places....not sure if the fur will grow back or not.

The also got in a gorgeous weim yesterday... hoping for the owners to show up as this dog is well cared for and someone's dog.

Other than that there is a slew of black labs.... poor dogs... black, lab and in a southern dog pound.... a death sentence. They did have 1 particular very nice young, big male.

Update: Roicy Lafayette/LA

Several of these dogs have private donors willing to contribute to the vet care of the animals if a LEGIT rescue group pulls them. Happy in Kennel 11 has 3 donations if pulled, a total of $300....should cover everything if vetted in LA. These donations are coming from generous people out of state.... I don't know them.... some have donated before. This will be paid directly to the vet being used for the animal. This is private donor to non profit rescue group.... has absolutely nothing to do with the shelter, so PLEASE do not call Roicy about wanting to sponsor a pet... they don't get involved in that at all and they are getting WAY too many phone calls... have only one person answering phones most of the time.

Some great animals.... and some very caring folks who realize that local rescue is BROKE and OUT OF SPACE right now and has gone WAY beyond the call of duty during these two hurricanes. LEGIT rescue groups who has been approved by Virginia and has proof of 501(c)(3) ONLY. Of course, individuals can adopt a pet from Roicy for full adoption fee(see Petfinder page), but these donations do not apply to individuals. Individuals do receive a certificate toward a spay/neuter and rabies. I will be away from email most of the day.

South Florida: Abandoned Pet Rescue Update

Hi, again!

Just thought I would share an update on the little terrier boy who could not use his back legs, now named Kip. One of Abandoned Pet Rescue's volunteers had offered to pay to have a special cart made for Kip if he was unable to recover from his injuries.

I received a call from Karen, the director of Abandoned Pet Rescue. She said that when they got the last batch of little Miami dogs, she had to move some kids around. Kip had a very nice ex-pen with blankets and pillows, but they needed his space, so Karen decided to put him in the bunny room (yes, they have rabbits).

For whatever reason, maybe inspired by the bunnies hopping about, Kip immediately stood up and started running around with the rabbits. She said he would run, fall down, pick himself back up, and run some more. He has since continued to stand, walk, run and make terrific progress!

If anyone has a BEYOND WONDERFUL home for this boy, please visit APR. They have so many CUTE little dogs (many from Miami) and some gorgeous large breed dogs.

So, our prayers and good wishes worked for our little Kip! Thank you all so much!

Lorraine

Hi, All:

Finally got power back after Wilma. All that is damaged is repairable, and we feel very, very fortunate.

On Sunday, I took a couple of sweet little ones from the shelter and to Abandoned Pet Rescue in Ft. Lauderdale, in advance of the hurricane. The little boy to the left was among them.

This sweet, sweet boy had been hit by a car, and he could not use his back legs at all. He drags himself out to go to the bathroom, and as long as I was petting him and speaking softly to him, he gazed straight into my eyes with his own full of gratitude. I brought him into APR, crying my eyes out. (Yes, after 2 years of this, I am still crying.)

Abandoned Pet Rescue has opened their doors to many Miami-Dade dogs recently, and we are so grateful to them. Hurricane Wilma hit them hard. They have over 100 animals at their shelter and have no power and are under a boil water order. They will probably not have any power until mid to late November.

Today, I drove there from Miami and took APR water and ice, as I could not reach them to find out what else they needed. When I got there, I was told that they need kitty litter and bleach more than anything. Of course, I had neither.

I then asked to see my sweet terrier boy, and there he lay on his side and he stared straight into my eyes again. He starting whimpering, even though he is on pain medication and antibiotics. He needs to get to a vet ASAP, but there are none open in the area, as the power is out throughout most of Broward County.

Does anyone know a rescue friendly vet that is open and will help this boy? If we can find a vet to help, is there anyone who can help get him there? Can anyone get some supplies to APR? I used up almost the last of my gasoline getting to Ft. Lauderdale today, and gas is very hard to find, so I may not be able to get up there again myself.

If you can help, please let us know.

I can give you directions if you would like to help.

Thank you!!!

What does it mean to "sponsor"?

Re: What does it mean to "sponsor"? What is a "kib"?

Depends on the shelter. Some shelters have paypal on their site and you can sponsor an animal with the shelter....might keep them around longer. At Roicy, sponsoring has nothing to do with the shelter. It is an offer of a donation made to a rescue group to offset their expenses, which on a heartworm positive dog could be several hundred dollars. Due to the hurricanes, everybody is broke and full. So, the kind people who offered donations on these animals pulled by rescue groups will go to their expenses for that animal...heartworm treatment, spay/neuter, shots.

Under no circumstances would I offer a donation to an individual to go adopt an animal...that could result in some abuse. Rescue "pulls" for a discounted fee but the spay/neutering, vetting, is on their nickel. They in turn place the animal...and yes, it can take months or years. I have a permanent foster because he nips.

Roicy works with groups it trusts to get the animals vetted and place in good homes. I encourage everybody to support local no kills even if they are not pulling at present... these guys give their all and can only survive on donations from the public. Non profit status has to do with the IRS. Many neighborhoods have pet limits... usually set forth in the restrictions, or can be set by the city.

Can money save every animal... absolutely not.... no place to put them sometimes, especially lately. Fosters are the stumbling block most of the time. Every rescue group has to set limits, and every single rescue person I know goes way beyond them. That's why so many burn out.

When someone gives money to sponsor an animal and it is "pulled" how does this work? Does it mean the $100 is used for a vet check up and shots? Is it used to keep the animal until they find a home? If people gave enough money could all the animals be "pulled". $100 doesn't even seem sufficient to keep some of these animals until someone is found to adopt them. Doesn't it take months in some cases? If people don't have room to pull the animals that are going to be euthanized. How come the $100 (or so) donation makes a difference? I'm not criticizing here. I just don't understand how it works.

How does someone become a 501c to be able to rescue an animal from a shelter but not planning to keep it permanently? If they wanted to do it even locally, for instance?

On this board or other cat boards I have seen the term "kib". This must be a kitten something? What is a "hard stray"?

I googled DNR (never heard of it either) and it said it is "Department of Natural Resources".

Do all cities have regulations on how many pets you can keep? Maybe my city has rules and I don't know it. Maybe "don't ask, don't tell is better?  :-)

Thank you!

Stealth Volunteers is a group for people who would like to search online to help reunite Katrina evacuees with their pets. If you know of anyone in your breed rescue group who has time to help, you will be able to focus on rescued dogs in just your breed, if they like.

It is only for people who are VERY comfortable with a computer and who are willing to call all over the country chasing down leads. You will be assigned to an animal with *some* ID and you will attempt to track the owner based on that ID. (IF you can't call people for some reason, we do have a Phone Buddy where other people make your calls.)

Our topic is finding evacuee owners. Basically we will assign an animal to you and you take it from there. You can learn about the methods on our website http://www.KatrinaSanAntonio.com/

GO TO http://www.KatrinaSanAntonio.com/ or http://www.illyria.com/shelter/foundpetlist.htm to see how to handle cases.

Please feel free to forward to others in your breed rescue group.

Thanks for your interest.
