Darnell Stewart swam 23 horses and mules to safety when he found the stables he worked in flooded by Katrina. For five days Darnell made his way neck deep through the waters to keep them alive.
Darnell is now being helped by IFAW's Emergency Relief team to care for the animals at the disaster response shelter based at the Lamar-Dixon Center in nearly Gonzales.
Darnell left his home in Gordon Street to sleep with the animals at the stables of a tourist city tour company, Mid City Carriages, where he worked as supervisor of the stables. When the water rose, he realised he had to get the 20 horses and three mules to high ground if they were to survive. With the help of a friend and a work colleague the remarkable rescue began.
"The water was so deep we had to swim some of the way as we took the animals one by one across to a park where there was dry ground. It was nearly impossible in the strong currents and my own horse Brandy injured his legs as we fought our way across. It took all day to get them to safety. We were wiped out by the end of it," said Darnell.
Incredible animal rescue operation continues
That was just the start of Darnell's rescue operation.
"For the next five days, I had to keep swimming and wading through the water to get feed from the stables for the horses or they would have starved," he said. "I even had to stop looters from stealing them."
On the last day, Darnell's left foot was badly cut by debris under the water. He managed to get to a road where the army picked him up in a truck. He was flown to San Antonio for medical treatment at an airforce medical base. Darnell insisted on returning to his horses and at last it was possible to get the horses to an area where they could be put on trucks and taken to the Lamar-Dixon Centre, where IFAW and other groups are running an animal shelter as part of the disaster response. Sadly, one mule died before the animals could be evacuated from the park and, since arriving at the center, two more horses have also died from their ordeal.
For the past three weeks Darnell has continued to care for his animals with the help of vets and other workers at the center. "They are my life and I was determined to save them, particularly my own horse Brandy, who is everything to me. I have nothing but the clothes I was wearing, but I am just happy the animals are safe," he said.
IFAW's Emergency Relief Team response leader, A.J. Cady, said: "This is the most incredible rescue story I have witnessed in this entire disaster. Darnell risked his life day after day in terrible circumstances to keep those animals alive and eventually get them to safety. Even now he is still caring for them although he lost everything personally."
IFAW is also now assisting Darnell with the costs of caring for Brandy and his work at the center to care for all the animals from the stables.
Woman Rescues 21 Dogs In Twelve Day Hurricane Ordeal

Inis Zelaya spent 12 days trapped by the floods that hit after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, but her only concern was the safety of her pets and those of her relatives and friends.
In all she rescued 21 dogs, risking her life as she clambered on a ladder between properties to rescue her neighbor's pets. The disaster left her with nothing and now she is being helped by IFAW so that she can continue to care for her foster family of animals.
"I was left with nothing but the clothes I am standing in, but I live for my animals. They are all that matters and the fact they are now safe makes me happy every day. I love them and they are my life," said 49-year-old Inis, whose home on Cleveland Avenue was wrecked.
"I knew I just had to get those dogs out"
"I used the ladder to get over the water to my neighbor's home and bust her window to get the dogs. I don't know how to swim so if I had fallen in I had no chance. Then I got a small boat and managed to move all the animals to the first floor of one property. People and animals were dying and drowning all around, it was very scary.
"Those 12 days were a nightmare, but I knew I just had to get those dogs out. Eventually the army came and they evacuated me, but I insisted the dogs go too. Some belong to my cousins and my aunt - everyone is happy they survived."
Now with help from IFAW, Inis is caring each day for all of the dogs in her own dedicated area of the LSU Emergency Relief Animal Shelter in Baton Rouge.
"Since I was evacuated, I have been back twice to rescue more animals from New Orleans," added Inis. "I just want to do everything I can to help rescue as many as possible."
IFAW's Emergency Relief team leader, AJ Cady, said: "The courage this woman displayed is inspiring and beyond belief. It is hard to imagine the hell she went through to save these animals. We are glad we can now give her a helping hand in looking after them and getting her life back together."
IFAW is also playing a leading role at the shelter by providing animal transport to move animals across the US, administration help and other crucial support.

Fire at Katie's Rescue Shelter PLEASE HELP!
On Friday, October 21st, Katie's Rescue Shelter caught fire and burned to the ground!
Carrie Bay Green, her Daughter Cynidel and Husband Kenneth were not injured as they were out of the house when the fire broke out. There were over 40 foster dogs and puppies inside when the house caught fire. 15 animals perished in the fire, including Carrie's own cat and two dogs.
This is a terrible tragedy, the house in Camden, West Virginia was not only a shelter for the many rescued animals it housed, but it was home to Carrie and her family. There was no fire insurance on the house.
Carrie is in desperate need of help. Many of the puppies rescued from the fire suffer from smoke inhalation and are in need of medical attention, a few still struggle for their lives.
Rescue groups and adopters are needed for these animals immediately. Many of the adult dogs have special needs and are presently tethered outdoors in the frigid temperatures with little or no shelter. These dogs need to get indoors ASAP. If we can get enough people/rescues between WV and NJ to speak up for these dogs, a transport can be arranged.
Carrie and her Daughter are presently staying with friends. Everything they owned was lost, all they have is the clothes on their backs. Please help them if you can, they need everything.
Donations can be sent to:
Katie's Rescue Shelter Post Office Box 194 Camden-on-Gauley, WV 26208 Email: mailto:katiesrescue20@hotmail-dot-com Web: http://www.katiesrescue.com/
Carrie can be reached by phone at 304 .765 .5925 .
PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN, CARRIE IS IN DIRE STRAIGHTS.
Thank you, Tana Glavocich http://www.the-human-race.com
