Update: Tammy Hanson's Dogs in Arkansas
From: JUDY BISHOP mailto:jbishop_1@msn-dot-com (@msn.com) Sent: Wednesday, October 26, 2005 11:33 AM #8 UPDATE - HELP IS NEEDED NOW - Tammy Hanson's Dogs in Arkansas
PLEASE CROSS POST AND SHARE WIDELY..........
Dear TAT, KCAT & KCRescue Family & Friends of the Animals -
Below is a report from our good friend Sandi who is on site (they live fairly close to the "sanctuary) and she and her husband Bill have been at the site daily. Another on site local person who is assisting is Desiree. You can well imagine from the earlier posts and photos this is grueling, heartbreaking work. Here is what Sandi posted (telling of Tuesday's work) for me to share.
I have also included another newspaper article from Seattle, as well as previous articles and web site links for those who may not have seen that particular part of this story.
I talked with Tammy of HSUS this morning. Things are really, really bad there and now things are in place to get the extra help and things they are needing.
Volunteers are needed - but they must be reputable and know what they are doing, whether it be the daily care of the animals, coordinating donations, fielding questions, etc. Some of Tammy Hanson's "friends" have been coming by and offering to help - which is exactly what is NOT needed. Security will remain tight - a lot of lives are at risk.
For those of you who know me personally and want to go down there and volunteer, please contact me direct at: jbishop_1 @ msn.com (@msn.com), and I will then let my contact know who you are. They would like to know how long you can stay, what group you are affiliated with, and what you feel is your expertise. You will be asked to sign a release of liability form (which is normal in these situations) and provide your own lodging, etc.
HSUS is also sending legal staff and hands on ground workers to assist. Coupled with you from the public who want to volunteer, they are hoping to have about 50 folks to keep things going smoothly.
Pasado's has approximately 59 dogs of the 131 Pit Bulls that have been identified so far. Arrangements are being made for Pasado's to move them out quickly when approval is given. The Sheriff hopes to be able to start releasing dogs soon. HSUS needs to first photograph and index every animal on the property. Photos taken by the Sheriff are evidence and can't be used in the showcasing of the animals to facilitate their return to their owners or to rescue people.
Pasado's staff is primarily working with the Pit Bulls - especially those 59 that were their's. That leaves about 500 other dogs needing attention.
There are also 3 goats on the property that Sandi and Bill have bought food for to feed.
More and more dogs are coming out of the woods - the population is growing.
An account at the local bank is being set up to provide monies for items needed to be purchased. Details to follow on that.
Work today will focus on clearing out the road and the property for easier access for volunteers and other workers on the property. The property is an absolute mess!!! Porta Potties are being delivered and room is needed to bring in the necessary supplies now and vehicles when the dogs start being released.
Two of Pasado's volunteers, as well as one deputy, were biten and required medical attention. Not all the dogs are aggressive, but they are all scared and anxious. The TLC and compassion by the volunteers will do a lot to help with this.
The Sheriff has been inundated with calls and e-mails. It is best to try not to contact him unless it is critical. Now every moment is needed in getting the ball rolling with donations, volunteers and the eventual release of the dogs and goats.
Supplies needed are blankets, tarps and dog houses. I'm sure food and water bowls won't be turned down. And, I would think collars and leases - or the slip collars used by vet's offices - will also be needed when the dogs are being released.
My contact will give me an update this afternoon and I will share.

RECAP OF Tuesday, October 25th - on site in Arkansas -
"Judy,
Hope I didn't sound too harsh...but the "local volunteers" such as myself were there before others even got there. We're working our butts off. I am not looking for credit...that doesn't mean a thing to me. But I don't want us to be discounted either.
Desiree is doing great. Her focus is with the dogs up front...the Pitts from Pasado's. Shirley and I fed more dogs today than I have probably ever seen in one place...I found 3 more new puppies today and moved them to a safer pen (their mom also of course). Dogs we had not seen before are coming out of the woods.
The stench from the dead dogs is becoming quite bad and the flies are horrible. But honestly it seems as though things are getting better. I heard from one of my regular customers today (left me a message) that lives near the "sanctuary". She just wanted to say "thank you thank you thank you!" She said Sunday morning was the first time the dogs hadn't barked all night and all morning. They have finally been all fed and are settling down.
Unfortunately some of the caged Pits are getting worse. I was told that one of them bit 2 of the Pasado people yesterday and they both had to go to the hospital. I was not there when it happened, so I cannot verify it. I do know that some of the dogs that were not too bad on Saturday, were much worse today, and I had trouble just feeding and watering them and cleaning their kennels. There is a black mixed breed dog that bit the Sheriff's deputy on Saturday. He went after me today as I was walking to the pen with the shih tzu and schnauzer. He lunged for my knee and I yelled at him and ran him back a bit, then he ran for me again and bit my boot - but, thankfully, that is all he got.
On a better note, some of the dogs are starting to recognize us. The old shih tzu wagged her tail at me today...she can't see me but she's learning my voice and she knows I will take a break to give her attention....the highlight of my day was when she wagged her tail....I just can't tell you how good it made me feel.
I was able to get in with more of the dogs in the "main compound" as I call it. There are several more rotties in there as well as several more german shepherds, including one with only three legs that is an absolute sweetheart. There are several pointers and all are super friendly. Also several purebred labs in all colors. Also a siberian husky and a husky/wolf cross ? that appears to be an older dog - white with blue eyes. Several border collies and a couple of blue tick coon hounds and walker hounds...and their mixes.
I gotta run for a minute at least...my old jack russell is demanding to be let in from her potty break!
Talk to you later
Sandi
