Jane's New Orleans Update 10-14-05
From: Jane Garrison mailto:JaneGarrison@comcast-dot-net Sent: Friday, October 14, 2005 10:01 PM Jane's New Orleans Update 10-14-05
Dear Friends:
Today was both a joyous day and a sad day. First the good news...we rescued 17 animals today. Five of those animals were from the streets the rest were rescued from INSIDE HOMES!!! One cat belonged to an 84 year old woman who had a nervous breakdown and had to be put in a home following the stress of worrying about her 10 year old cat Susie. Her grandson went to the house to "collect the dead body" (as he said) and discovered Susie was still alive! He called us because she was hissing and extremely mad (to say the least). We went and rescued the animal for this man. Unbelievably, this man has decided not to tell his grandmother that the cat is alive b/c he feels the grandmother can't take care of the cat anymore anyway due to her mental state. He gave the cat up to us. Of course, I am trying desperately to convince him to at least tell her she is alive, so she will have peace of mind. Other incredible rescues today included cats, a pit bull, a poodle and even a fish! These animals survived over a month without food and water. Most of the animals were extremely thin but absolutely thrilled to see us!
Now the sad news...rescuers reported to me today (from all different sections of the city) that there are dead animals in the streets, under houses and in back yards. These animals do not look like they died from the flooding nor do they look like they have been dead for weeks...they just died. This has been my fear...now that the number of volunteers has decreased greatly, there are not enough people to feed the thousands of animals who are on the streets. Without more help the animals on the streets will die slow deaths from dehydration or starvation.
Regardless of what people are telling you...we need help. We need every animal group to join together and help get a handle on this situation. I am saddened that we still have such a long list of addresses that have not been checked. The only reason why we still have this list is because we don't have (and never had) enough volunteers to go check them. We only had 22 people out rescuing today...clearly not enough.
Here is the situation in a nutshell:
1. We need search and rescue people. Yes, animals are still alive.
2. We need people willing to drive around and set up food and water stations on the streets.
3. We need supplies---cat food, dog food, disposable lasagna trays (for water bowls), dog traps, etc.
4. We need donations to cover vet bills for the criticals who have to go the emergency clinic. You can either send donations directly to me or if you need them to go through a non-profit let me know and I will get them to go through 1800saveapet.com or another non-profit.
5. Lastly, I am looking for one very strong leader who can stay in New Orleans for a few months to help with this rescue effort. This person must be hard working, smart, tenacious and motivating. They will need to coordinate with local people and set up long-term rescue and feed efforts. I will personally find funding for this person and spend time with them to get them up to speed with everything they will need to know. Remember, we can't just leave all these animals on the streets...
6. We do not have any housing so anyone coming down must be resourceful and take care of themselves.
Please, before you go to bed tonight think of the animals who may still be trapped inside homes just waiting for us to rescue them. Think of the animals who survived the storm and the flood, and are now starving on the streets. Now...think of how you can rearrange your life so you can commit to spending a week in New Orleans to help these animals. Think you can make a difference? You bet you can!!!
Please come and help.

New Orleans Shelter assistance
If anyone has extra old towels please bring to the caaws building. Lisa will pick up on Saturday evening to take to a shelter in New Orleans on Sunday. If you can't make it by Saturday, just leave them whenever you can, we have volunteers going down to New Orleans to bring supplies on a regular basis.
Also the shelter mentioned above that we have been assisting is being run by 2 groups called Mixed Up Mutts and Mutt shack. They are set up in an old school in East N.O. at the cross streets of Crowder and Hayne on the lake. (Crowder exit off of I-10) They have been given permission to operate by the Depart. of Homeland Security. This area is still uninhabitable and without electricity. They are using generators. We've had several of volunteers go down this week and bring them much needed supplies. We will to continue o assist them as long as possible.
For those of you that have been longing for your days and nights at Lamar or LSU, this shelter is also in need of volunteers. I am just letting you know about it in case you are interested in helping. The shelter is very well run and the animals are being well cared for considering the circumstances.
I just want you all to know that even thought the major national groups are pulling out and the headlines are gone, animal rescues are still taking place in New Orleans and the work is far from done. This particular group pulled out a live dog 6 weeks after the hurricane that had been tied up inside his home. The military brought in a severely malnourished puppy this week also. I could go on and on about the amazing stories of the animals they have helped save. The cat area alone had over 50 cats this week with only 2 volunteers. Most of the volunteers are from out of state. Please pass along this info to anyone that would be interested in helping these people. Again, CAAWS will continue to assist them and similar groups by providing supplies as needed from donations we've received to help the animals of the hurricane.
Thank you, Jolene CAAWS President mailto:jodakcaaws@yahoo-dot-com
