As you may already know our shelter was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Our immediate needs are being taken care of by HSUS, Project Halo and animal control officers from around the SE region.
They are currently taking all of the animals we receive to Hattiesburg where the strays are being held for a minimum of 30 days. If you have a rescue group or would be able to place some of these animals, please call 888-722-3106. There is a huge need for assistance at the end of the holding period to place these precious animals in homes where they will be loved and cared for. If you can assist in this fashion, please call the number above and register.
VMAT is being demobilized today. I was notified of the order yesterday. We are in desperate need of veterinarians and vet techs to volunteer here in Gulfport to attend to the animals that are coming to us. We are shelterring more than 100 animals at this time, most of which require medical attention and care.
Please email me names, contact info and dates of availability on anyone who can help care for these abandoned animals. We are going to need help for at least the next two months.
If you would like to help, but are not currently a licensed veterinarian or vet tech, please contact Dr. Carla Huston, DVM, and she will get you accredited. She has assured me that process is quick and painless.
I am writing to ask you for your help to make our shelter operational again, so we can service the homeless animals of our community once the disaster relief runs out. As I mentioned above, our shelter was devastated. Our building took 4Â?Ĺ’ of water and our vehicles were totaled. I have put together a list of things we lost and will need to become operational. The list is extensive and runs the gamut from pickup trucks to cotton swabs. Please help however you can.
I sat down and cried when I first laid eyes on our shelter and saw our staff with no water and no electricity working to shovel through the debris, while they cared for the 120 animals that survived. I am here to tell you that the people that care for our homeless animals have inspired me! They were driving to the shelter to make sure these animals had care when they didn't know if they had enough gas to get back home.
Please forward this list to anyone who could be of assistance . We are a non-profit so I will be happy to provide a tax ID number to any donor who requests it.
Financial donations can be made to the Humane Society of South Mississippi's Katrina Relief fund in any of the following ways:
- Click on the Â?gHurricane Katrina Relief Fund Donate NowÂ?h link on the left panel of this page for donations through HSSMÂ?fs Pay Pal account.
- You may mail donations to HSSM, 13756 Washington Ave., Gulfport, MS 39503.
- Donations can be made at any Hancock Bank Branch in the name of HSSM Katrina Relief fund.
If you have any questions about donating please feel free to contact Mollie Hillburn at 228-596-9890.
This tragedy has shown there are so many people who care about the animals. I know that we will make it through thisÂ?cand it is because of people like you.
Thank you in advance for your support and please keep us in your prayers. We appreciate your generosity!

LA SPCA Requests Help to Erect New Shelter 06:06
Date: Sun, 02 Oct 2005 06:06:37 -0000 From: "veni harlan" mailto:borzoirule@cox-dot-net Subject: LA SPCA Requests Help to Erect New Shelter
There is a dire and immediate need for supplies to erect secure chain link fencing (assumably minimum 6' fencing) in Algiers, LA. for the new LASPCA shelter by October 5. The LASPCA, in addition to being a nonprofit rescue organization, is contracted by the city of New Orleans for animal control, and will need to house thousands of rescued animals from Orleans Parish. These are animals that were being housed at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, LA.
Contact Laura Maloney, director of the LASPCA at mailto:laura@la-spca-dot-org to make a donation or provide fencing materials.

Dr. Littlefield, Assistant LA State Veterinarian, states that all surplus donated supplies are being redistributed to other parishes and shelters as needed within Louisiana. So your good deeds and those of companies, will benefit the animal relief efforts of Rita as well— and not go to waste.

Update from Eric in NO 05:10
Date: Sun, 2 Oct 2005 05:10:22 -0400 From: "Linda B." mailto:keywestgail@yahoo-dot-com
Subject: (Five_State_Rescue) Update from Eric in NO & suggestions for those ready to go to New Orleans
Eric says that he must leave New Orleans tomorrow. He went to New Orleans planning to spend 3 days and has been there for a month. He says he will lose his job if he does not get back. BUT...others will continue going to the homes that left pets behind. Some of his group are still there and found several animals alive today. He has given the list that his group has been working to others, too. Eric says that the number of pets that teams are able to rescue on a daily basis has gone down - reasons: some are dead, some have escaped the home because the National Guard left doors open while searching for survivors or bodies, another group had already gotten the pet, etc. He says even if the pet is discovered dead that at least they can notify the owner. Some good news is that residents returning are volunteering to help.
Eric gave this tip: Use Glass Chalk or White Shoe Polish and write on the side of your vehicle "LASPCA Animal Rescue" (Gonzales)
There are two places where you can just show up and they will coordinate efforts and work from lists that they have. Winn-Dixie and Gonzales.
GONZALES: If you are able to do search and rescue, meet the S&R team at 5:30 a.m. at the "prowler trailer" between barns 1 and 2. Ask for Jane Garrison.

501c3 no-kill sanctuaries or rescue groups that want to adopt animals through Humane Society of Louisiana, CONTACT: Jen Daley, Katrina Adoptions Coordinator, mailto:jndaley@yahoo-dot-com
I was contacted by several people that say they can go...tomorrow or Monday. They were from New Jersey, Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee. It is urgent - time is of the essence - as some pets are barely hanging on. Rescuers say many are very dehydrated but often respond quickly after being given iv's.
Kinship Circle made a lengthy post (the directions above to Winn-Dixie are from that post) a couple of days ago with information on locations/groups needing help. They listed items to bring to help. One was "CANNED ID Prescription dog food. Dogs coming in are so emaciated that canned ID is the only food they're able to digest." If you want to see the list of items they recommended, I posted it to my blog so I could find it.

I hope I covered everything. Please email or phone me if you are leaving for New Orleans.
