Alberta chowists and Louisiana chows 21:23

Subject: Alberta chowists and Louisiana chows
Date: Thu, 29 Sep 2005 21:23:00 -0600 (Mountain Daylight Time)
From: Sue Kool mailto:xiong-chows@shaw-dot-ca

Permission to crosspost

On Saturday, October 1,2005, a convoy of vehicles will be going to Louisiana from Alberta with advance permission to return to Alberta with 150 dogs! The group will be working with Best Friends and Noah's Wish rescue groups and Alberta's own Deb Brewer paid $1000 of her own funds to make sure that chows and chow mixes would be included in the dogs to come north.

Deb has been working feverishly to get sponsors for the chows, and so far services of 2 vets, Dr Steve Marsden, and Dr Greg Davies to supply vet care (donated) and Cabana Kennels to donate boarding dogs that we do not find foster homes for immediately. She also has found local foster homes as have I. ALL Alberta chow breeders that were contacted have agreed to take in foster chows and chow mixes.

When the dogs arrive, they will stay at a Calgary pet spa for quarantine and health evaluations, and will continue to stay there until any health issues are treated (fleas etc). The chows and chow mixes will be then released to fostering for a predetermined length of time to give people a chance to claim their dog. The dogs will be listed on Petfinder and the other sites for Katrina animals. After the predetermined length of time, the dogs will be placed for adoption. The predetermined time is set by the regulations that all the other rescues have to follow when taking any animal from Louisiana

Thanks Deb for stepping up to the challenge! Thanks to the sponsors, one of which is Pet Planet, and those that care enough to make a difference, not just talk about it.

Doberman, Rottweiller and Greyhound rescue, just to mention a few, have saved virtually every member of their breeds. If everyone bands together IT CAN BE DONE.

The question is...Will we?

URGENT -- ANIMAL CRATES NEEDED IN WACO NOW

It has been brought to our attention that the National Guard is right now relocating some of the elderly evacuees (from Rita) to the old abandoned Walmart in Waco, TX. The evacuees are allowed to bring their animals with them, but ONLY if they crate them.

Crates -- any kind, any size are needed NOW. If anyone has any connections to Petsmart or Petco, now would be a great time to use them.

Please help if you can.

The person coordinating this is J. R. Ott - please call him if you can help or need additional information at 512-627-2223

Thank you very much.

Need help for Prince the dog that saved his owner...

Hi,

Saw the post regarding Prince the dog that woke up his owner and got them out in time with the flooding. The story is copied below to read in full. I called to get an update from Joyce Allen, Prince is out of ICU after second surgery and will hopefully be able to go home soon. Her conditions at her home is not fit for Prince to recuperate so the best case scenario is to find someone that is welling to open their home to her and her 3 dogs. The next would be to help with funds so she can board Prince. Open to ideas here...whether a rescue group could help set up a foster home for Prince so he would at least be in a loving home while he is recuperating. Joyce Allen's home is in Metarie, L.A. but she said that anyplace within an hour drive would be fine so she can get back and forth to check on house. She has limited computer access but can call her on her cell phone 504-339-6278.

Thanks and hopefully something will work out here!

Dana

DESCRIPTION: Can someone help a Katrina hero named Prince? My Sheltie Prince has been in ICU at Mississippe State Vetinary Hospital for a week. He saved my life during Hurricane Katrina - now I've got to find a way to save his. I live in the Greater New Orleans area in Metairie, LA. My miniature collie nudged my head and my hand and the side of the bed, and whined and barked until I woke up. Then he woke the other two dogs up - just the way Lassie did with Timmy on the old TV series. By the time we got to the door the dogs had to swim out and I waded out to higher ground. A week ago Prince was hit on the road near the shelter in Greenville, MS where am. He had to be taken 3 hours away to Starkville, as Greenville is a small, rural community. He's still in ICU, is very weak and has developed stress ulcers in his esophagus and stomach. His digestive tract is inflamed as a result. The school keeps saying I should try to come there to see him daily, that it would help tremendously, but I can't. I'm in a shelter three hours away in Greenville, MS and there is no shelter in Starkville. I got a ride to see him one time this week. If the LSU school of Vetinary medicine would accept him, and someone could arrange a transfer, then I could relocate to a shelter in Baton Rouge. My daughter is in the dorm there and he could see familiar faces each day. I'm afraid the lonliness is overtaking him and he's giving up. Please, please, please send this SOS to anyone you can think of who could help. The number of the Mississippi Vet School ICU is 1-662-325-3432. His surgeon is Dr. Silverman and his caregive is Marie Flemming. My cell number is 504-339-6278. He needs further intervention and help to make it. God Bless You! Joyce Allen

--- Thanks Dana!

We should not all call the lady and run up her cell phone, so it's good that you did on behalf of all of us. I found her story on a website with a guy promising to help raise money for her with his paypal. Wasn't sure it was legit. Now that you've talked to her and she is legit, let's find a way to get her some funds and cross post her need especially to the SHELTIE groups. If you will Dana, call her one more time and find out which is the best way for us to send her some funds.....

Plan Implemented for Reuniting Animals & Families 15:11

PRESS RELEASE: Plan Implemented for Reuniting Animals & Families

http://www.ldaf.state.la.us/aboutldaf/presscenter/pressreleases/pressrelease.asp?id=508

PRESS RELEASE

Plan Implemented for Reuniting Animals & Families

September 19, 2005

Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry (LDAF), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association's (LVMA) State Animal Response Team (SART), Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LASPCA), Louisiana State University's School of Veterinary Medicine and the Humane Society of the United States will implement a plan to re-unite owners and rescued animals over the next 30 days.

Extractions and admissions of animals in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina are beginning to decrease. Owners should plan to claim animals sheltered at evacuation facilities in Lafayette, Monroe, Shreveport, Slidell, and Gonzales before October 1. After that date, the various animal humane groups will arrange foster shelter of unclaimed pets for a minimum of 15 days. After October 15, 2005, unclaimed animals will be eligible for adoption.

Owners seeking to claim their rescued animals may call the Humane Society of the United States' Call Center at 1-800-HUMANE1, make contact by email at mailto:katrina@petfinder-dot-com or see http://www.petfinder.com/ . Callers and emailers should be aware that the focus of the operation is still on the very demanding business of rescuing, recovering and caring for animals from New Orleans. For those who wish to go to the rescue center in person, it is located at the Lamar-Dixon Expo facility in Gonzales, Louisiana, 9030 St. Landry Road, Gonzales, LA 70737.

In order to protect animals residing in Hurricane Katrina shelters, minimize the likelihood of disease outbreaks and protect human health, sheltered animals receive appropriate vaccinations and medication. To facilitate re-uniting animals with their owners, each animal is photographed and all animals receive microchip identification if needed. Medical and identification information travels with the pets. However, the process of establishing a searchable database of these rescued pets has not kept pace with the rescues. Therefore, your animal may have been rescued but the Call Center may not have a record of that rescue in the database yet. For at least the next few days, the highest priority will remain the rescue and the immediate care of as many pets as can be found and accommodated. Please be assured rescuers are working as fast as they can to make the database current so calls of concerned pet owners can be answered more fully.

To date, over 6,000 animals have been sheltered at emergency shelter locations coordinated by LDAF. This number includes approximately 4,000 dogs, 1,000 cats, 400 horses and lesser numbers of various other companion animals. LDAF and USDA/APHIS in cooperation with Louisiana Cattlemen's Association have also provided emergency feeding and water via truck and airlift for stranded livestock in the impacted area.

I got a call for help from a vet tech in McIntosh County Ga saying that their small shelter, which was funded and built by a rescue organization called Wings of something? was shipped a bunch(don't have exact numbers)of dogs from a Ms shelter so they could make room for New Orleans rescued dogs. Now the county administrator has ordered that all of those shipped in dogs be put to sleep since they only keep them 7 days and that time is up.I'm working to get better details of who built what and who pays for what. The newspapers both locally and in the Ms town where the dogs were shipped from have been notified of this kill order. My question is.. if there is a large All Breed rescue in that area who could help these people or can someone point them in the right direction.? I'm afraid a couple of Mn shelters are doing the very same thing. They did the "feel good" deal of taking NO animals at the expense of putting down animals in their own shelters to make room for the incoming :( Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

St. Bernard Parish shelter operational - volunteers needed 15:05

Date: Thu, 29 Sep 2005 15:05:05 -0500
From Rick Ducharme of Jacksonville

Please crosspost -

I am posting this message on 9/29/05 from the St. Bernard Parish, New Orleans where I have been helping the ASPCA and the St. Bernard Animal Control set up a new temporary shelter. The shelter is now up and running and the need for volunteers is great! The St. Bernard Animal Control director estimates that there are still 1500 animals left in the parish and wants to get them all out as soon as possible. Amazingly, many of these animals are still alive and in fairly good condition. For instance, just today three separate people came in with dogs that had been left locked in their houses for an entire month and the dogs, though shell-shocked looking, were all physically healthy.

The shelter is being set up under 2 large tents - each tent is huge (about the size of one of the barns at Lamar-Dixon). Here's what's happening here now: Each animal is being kept in a crate in the tent. The dogs are being walked often enough (4 times a day right now) so that none of them have had any accidents in their crates. There are four veterinarians and lots of vet techs caring for the animals too. Though it is extremely hot outside, it is pretty comfortable under the tents, especially when there is a breeze, and there are fans on order that will keep it even cooler. The ASPCA is shipping more supplies every day and everyone is working very hard to keep the animals very comfortable. Currently, the plan is to ship animals out of this temporary shelter every few days to one particular humane organization in Florida where they will be held for the stray waiting period. Many pet owners who have lost their pets are coming and the St. Bernard animal control director feels it will be easier to reunite them if all the animals are sent to one location.

St. Bernard Parish seems like a very safe place to be and there is no looting or problems in the parish and everyone here has been wonderful. Kennel staff volunteers are needed immediately, so anyone who is interested in coming should email Aimee at the ASPCA right away if they can come. (Please don't email me back as this is the first time I've had access to email and I have to leave tomorrow). Her email address is mailto:aimees@aspca-dot-org The temporary shelter is in Chalmette and she will be able to give you more specific directions. Volunteers should come in an RV with a generator or bring a tent and they should be self reliant (i.e. bring your own water and food). A solar powered shower and port-a-potties are provided and the local fire station will let you take showers there too.

The animal control director here, Cherie, is wonderful, especially considering that she has completely lost her home and everything in it. All the people who live here have been wonderful too. If you can help come take care of the animals in the kennel, they would love to have you volunteer! They just request that you contact aimee at the address above first.

Thanks,
Susan Feingold, Assistant Director
Fulton County Animal Services

PRESS RELEASE

Owners Need to Claim Rescued Horses By Oct. 1

September 28, 2005

Horses sheltered at Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales need to be claimed by their owners by Oct. 1.

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry (LDAF), the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS), Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association's (LVMA) State Animal Response Team (SART), Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LASPCA), the Humane Society of the United States, and the Louisiana State University's School of Veterinary Medicine have been re-uniting rescued animals and their owners since Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast.

Horses rescued from the New Orleans area have been sheltered at the Lamar-Dixon Expo facility in Gonzales, Louisiana. All horses are being treated by licensed veterinarians and have received a Tetanus shot and have had a Coggins test performed. In order to facilitate reunions with their owners, each horse was photographed and received microchip identification if needed. The photographs are posted on http://www.petfinder.com/ and information is available at 1-800-HUMANE1.

There are approximately 200 horses still sheltered at Lamar-Dixon and over half of these horses' owners have been identified. Owners should plan to claim their horses before Oct. 1. After that date, foster care will be arranged for a minimum of 15 days and after Oct. 15 unclaimed horses will be eligible for adoption. Owners may recover their horses at the Lamar-Dixon Expo facility at 9030 St. Landry Road, Gonzales, LA 70737. Please be aware that adoptions will not be facilitated at this location.

To date, over 6,000 animals have been sheltered at locations across the state coordinated by LDAF and LVMA SART. This number includes approximately 4,050 dogs, 1,320 cats, 400 horses and lesser numbers of various other companion animals. LDAF and USDA APHIS in cooperation with the Louisiana Cattleman's Association have also provided emergency feeding and water via truck and airlift for stranded livestock in the impacted area.

 PLEASE FORWARD ON..GET YOUR PETS

Dear All:

I am at at hurricane update meeting now. The Mayor just made the following announcement: "As of Thursday AM, 9/29/05 check points will be moved back to only the wet areas. If all goes well on Friday residents can come in to either look and leave or stay in the targeted zip codes of 70114, 70131, 70116, 70115, 70118, 70130, 70112, and 70113. If you leave, you must leave by sunset if you have no place to stay. On 10/5/05, check points will be pulled back to only lower/upper 9th Ward where there is still water today. Houses that have red stickers on them have been deemed to have structural damage and residents should not go in and if you do, you do so at your own risk. We encourage you not to enter these buildings." Mayor also announced that both the 17th Street and London Street canal levees are not completely repaired. Mayor was just asked if some of the dry areas that are not on the above zip list can go back any earlier than 10/5 and he replied that 10/5 will be the latest so there may be people back in Lakeview and Gentilly earlier than 10/5. I will email if I hear anything else I

Big Dogs face big challenges. Nothing fits. Apartments don't like them. They're medical bills are high. And often times, they're the last to get a new home when placed in a shelter. Small dogs can face an entirely different set of challenges.

Thats why Big Paws Only and Tiny Tracks, a giant breed community and small breed community, is working together and has developed a new feature in it's Paw Prints section for listing dogs that need adoption complete with images and details. It then broadcasts it across the forum/boards and its member sites. They're easy to list, and it could just find him/her a family!

SW Louisiana shelters full, must start euthanizing soon

I'm sure where you're getting your information from, or where you read that, but Iberia Humane Society is a NO KILL shelter. We are NOT euthanizing any animals. There is a lot of misinformation out there, and there are a lot of rumors. Please do not believe everything that you read or hear. We try very hard to take care and treat our animals. I'm fostering a little rescued dog from St. Bernard parish now, and Dr. White GAVE me medicine and shampoo to treat him. We all have our hearts in this - Dr. white and his staff have waded through disease-infested water to save the lives of these animals. How could anyone think he would have them killed???

We moved out all our pre-existing abandoned and homeless animals to shelters upstate that welcomed them in. This was to make room for all the evacueed pets that we rescued. Our aim was to keep the animals close to home to make it easier for their owners to locate them.

We are keeping all our pets for at least months to give their owners ample time to be reunited with their pets. I can't believe that people would even think that we would euthanized any of our animals. Please dispel these rumors.

If anyone has any questions, Dr. White has invited you to contact him at 337.560.0003.

Thank you,

Is this the shelter that the vet named "Eric ?" has been working with? What is the point of rescuing 300 animals, if you're going to kill them anyway? This is not making sense! Supposedly, there is at least location info for all pets this "Eric" vet has rescued? Please explain.

Please get this message out to every and anyone you know who might be able to help. The emergency shelters here, in New Iberia and Abbeville, LA (near Lafayette) are filling up fast, due to Hurricane Rita. We have got to get these animals (I'm speaking specifically of dogs and cats) out of here to fosters, etc. Their fate is not good if they stay, and then there's the problem of what to do with the many more coming in. The Iberia Humane Society is a kill shelter, and today they announced that they are full. Not good.

Please do what you can to get this out to as many people and rescues you can think of. All animals leaving have been/will have been vetted, microchipped, and logged into the system for tacking for their owners, so they will have to be held as fosters for at least 30 days. Then they can be put up for adoption.

Thank you, from my heart.

Please document & send your information as requested below:

Work has been underway for the last week to ten days for a full-fledged investigation into Pet Disaster Relief efforts during Katrina.

What is needed is FACTUAL DOCUMENTATION - not rumors - not hearsay evidence - but people who are willing to come forward who have FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE of the conditions in Gonzalez in particular and who are willing to testify if necessary.

Flying off the handle won't help the issue - it will just do more harm to the investigative efforts.

So - if anyone has DOCUMENTED FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE please send it to Diane Albers, FAKC and she will make sure it is placed in the proper hands.

WV - Mason County Animal Shelter in Crisis! Date: 9/29/2005 10

PLEASE CROSSPOST!!!

I know everyone's tired of getting e-mails from us, but I had to send this out because we have come to the point where we don't even have enough to cover payroll this week. We're afraid we're going to have to close our doors and give the shelter back to the County. We would like to think that, after all the publicity they received, they will not go back to using the gas chamber, but we don't want to take that chance.

We're not ready to give up, and that is why I'm sending out this plea. They never allowed us to remove the gas chamber from the building, so it still sits there in the puppy room reminding us of the suffering it caused over the years. We held a fundraiser last Saturday that was advertised for two weeks and it was almost a total flop. We collected $134, nowhere near what we were expecting. We can't understand why we're not getting the help we used to. Maybe it's because we started doing euthanasia by injection instead of using the gas chamber. Maybe it's because we had to fire someone who is well known in the community. We really don't know. But we need help today.

If we can't raise any money, then we at least need to get as many animals out as possible this weekend. We are still working on the 501(c)(3), and hopefully it will go through before the end of the year. If you can help with a donation, please go to our website and click on the donate button http://www.masoncounty.petfinder.org/ . If you would like to mail it, you can make the check payable to

Mason County Animal Welfare League, Inc. (or MCAWLI)
and send it
c/o Rachel Moxley,

Mt. Airy, MD 21771.

If you would like to help by pulling some animals, please e-mail Missy at mailto:x5dogs@aol-dot-com .

Thank you to everyone who has been so generous in the past, and also anyone who offered help for the pregnant lab this past weekend (thank you, Katie, for getting the word out!).

Offer to take 2 Roicy dogs 12:04

Offer to take 2 Roicy dogs, if any local rescuer can pull them.

Kellie,

We emailed last week. Good news to hear they will stop the killing until Oct. 13. Gives everyone a breather. Will you please keep your eyes open for JRTs. "Our person" is still looking and would like to adopt one from a high kill. Do still have that email in which we corresponded as you could contact the Rescuer on that email? Maybe she could fax you the paperwork.

Roicy needs all of us to keep our eyes on them. What is on the website isn't always what is in the shelter. What my contact told me, the back room, (the killing room) hasn't been empty in ages.

One of our BC Rescuers brought ten dogs to Canada from Roicy - $220 US per dog on Continental. Our little Rescue doesn't have the funds to do that. Sigh.

I was told by a gal in the area that if someone with 501c3 papers will fax them (Roicy) and put me as a person with ability to pull that I can go and get them out with the payment for the chip. Also was told that they are not killing anything til the 13th of Oct. that rescuers are pulling twice weekly right now. Which is good to know...but my offer still stands on those two..

Katrina evacuees in Denver, must surrender Pit Bulls 02:27

Katrina evacuees in Denver, must surrender Pit Bulls,
 Plz, write/email the mayor

Crosspost the heck out of this!

From two different sources I have heard that the Pit Bull-owning Katrina evacuees that have come to Denver (really, through no real choice of their own) and are staying at the ex-Lowry air force base in east Denver have had to give up their dogs, because of our weird machiavellian archaic ban. As if these people haven't lost enough. See the write-up below.

State Rep, Debbie Stafford has been volunteering at Lowry w/the evacs and has heard the same stories, but as of yet has been unable to find the actual people this has happened to. She's been working for the last couple of weeks to get the word out to the press. It's time to make this known. Taking people's dogs is so completely uncompassionate and just downright mean and wrong.

Here's what I would ask you to do. Write a polite letter to Denver's Mayor asking him how his City could be so without empathy and compassion. The Mayor really does care how his city is viewed throughout the country and he does not support this breed ban anyway. I ENCOURAGE PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF DENVER AND THE STATE TO SEND LETTERS AS WELL! Let him know that people all over the country are watching this with horror. Even though this is an emotional issue (at least to me, and I know to many of you), please write politely. Ask him what he's going to do about it. Ask is this worth it to take people's dogs from them after they've lost so much already. Ask how his city could be so without heart. Please reference that these people are in the former Lowry Air Force base.

MAKE SURE TO PUT YOUR ADDRESS EVEN IF (ESPECIALLY IF) YOU ARE OUT OF THE CITY AND STATE. Also, I would not reference Pit Bulls in the subject line, but rather "Lowry Evacuees," "Katrina Refugees," "Lowry," etc.

The mayor's e-mail address is mailto:MileHighMayor@ci.denver.co-dot-us

The below information comes from PB Warrior Sandi in Kentucky. She is a nurse who is helping Katrina evacs in KY. I am going to call Doug Kelley of AC to see if I can get that man's Pit Bull out of the muni shelter. I'll let you know.
