Rescue and LSU shelter

I have heard this same info in many places. Thank you for your kind accuracy.

It's good to know 'how' to help. I still have a major problem with the '30' days and all that died and are still dying because of it.

After pestering numerous people at the LSU shelter where I am volunteering this is what I found out regarding rescues being able to pull dogs from there. Owners have until this Fri Sept 30th to decide what to do with their animals- rehome them themselves, place them in foster homes, or release them to be adopted. Also there are some animals there without owners.

The official policy at this time is this: Rescue organizations must be legitimate and be recognized by the state they operate in (I assume this means you must have nonprofit 501C3 status). Rescues must be willing to pull at least 20 dogs. (The volunteer who gave me these rules and I agree this basically rules out all breed specific rescues as there will not be 20 of any one breed that need to be placed. Rescues will have to work around this by pulling for each other or lobbying to get this policy changed, but I am not sure who is in authority to amend this policy. There WILL be 20 pit bulls there needing placement so if there are any good Pit Bull Rescues out there please cross post.)

Rescues must agree to post the animals on Petfinder so that the public has opportunity to reclaim lost pets. Lastly rescues must agree to hold the pets until Dec 1st before rehoming them also allowing families time to get setlled and reclaim their beloved pets.

There is now a sign up list at the front desk of the Parker Ag Colesium for rescues to sign up to take any pets available for adoption. They ask for the name of your organization and a name and phone number of a contact person. The volunteer who got me this information and started the list is named Carol so if people give you the run around try asking for her. She was very friendly and helpful. The number I have for this shelter is (225) 578-3104.

If any of you are from out of the area and they insist you come in person to put your name on the list email me off list at mailto:v_sibley@hotmail-dot-com with you contact info and rescue name and I will add your name when I am working there.

Hope this post was helpful; sorry it was so long.

Dogs found in apt. 21:19

Dogs found in apt.

When I returned home after Katrina I checked on some apts. that I own in Kenner. I noticed that one of my tenants had left her 2 dogs behind. They apparently left a sliding glass door open in the back for the dogs to go in and out. Every time I went by there the dogs would run back in the apt. I tried to call them but I guess they are scared. A neighbor had been putting out food and water for them. The neighbor called me today and said the male dog kept crying and coming to her door. When she finally followed the dog to the apt. the female dog had been struck by the patio door that fell and pinned her down. The neighbor says she knows the female dog is pregnant. Is there anyone that can help with this horrible situation? Legally, I cannot go into the apartment but I can't stand for these two dogs to be in there by themselves. I have tried contacting the tenants but to no avail. I think the dogs are maltese or shitzus. I hope I spelled that right. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

For emaciated Dogs in the shelters that cannot eat well 21:19

For emaciated Dogs in the shelters that cannot eat well

Pasados is asking for Prescription ID dog food donations since many of the dogs coming in now are so emaciated they can't keep things down. I'm not a vet but try people food. Taking ANY people food, left over hamburgers, soups, garbage (as long as it is not rotton), yogurt, dairy, and mashing it , mixing it with water might do the trick. They will be more motivated with the taste. I don't feed commercial dog food at all and it makes a big difference. I know it is impractical to feed these dogs this way but in an emergency when they won't/can't eat it is worth a try.

RABBIT assistance available 20:30

From: "rnrq" mailto:lori@showbunny-dot-com
RABBIT assistance available

I can take any tattooed rabbit that is in need of shelter here in California--if they can be gotten here.

The affected areas are home to a large proportion of the known stock for several endangered breeds of rabbits; there also are quite a few breeders of the more common types who have invested many years of their lives to develop their herds.

To assume that all rabbits are pets and should be spayed/neutered and adopted out is a grave and potentially legally volatile pitfall faced by rabbit rescuers; regardless of how one personally feels, any rescuer in a disaster of this magnitude MUST be able to take the breeding perspective into account.

That there are people willing to rescue rabbits from the area is wonderful, please don't get me wrong. But they have to react a little differently than they would to, say, a feral colony. :)

I am NOT discussing dogs or cats--just rabbits.

PLEASE--if you know of those taking on rabbits from the area, PLEASE have them contact me directly for assistance in distinguishing the pet from the breeding animal, and how to get further help for their efforts.

We want to make sure that breeders affected by the devastation are reunited with their animals as soon as possible, and that their animals are safe, healthy, and intact when that happens. Only after diligent efforts have been made to locate owners should rabbits be altered or permanently placed.

Thank you for your time.

Need foster help and volunteers

All of the animals brought into Hattiesburg are in the process of being transported out to approved shelter/organization foster homes after proper ID photos and microchipping are done to each animal. The Hattiesburg shelter should have the fostering process completed by the first week of October. This means after the animals are all sent to foster homes, it make take up to a week to disassemble the temporary shelter so help is need with this endeavor as well.

If your shelter/organization is interested in fostering at least 20+ animals for at least 30 days, then please visit HSUS's website, and fill out a shelter foster application. http://www.hsus.org/

Any questions should be directed to HSUS. A similar process is occurring at the LSU temporary shelter, too. I previously sent out an email concerning that foster program.

NOTE:

1) You must have an air conditioned unit to transport the animals out of Hattiesburg (NO dogs/cats will be transported on flatbed trucks or horse trailers.

2) You MUST be approved through the application process before picking up any animals from Hattiesburg

3) You should have access to a microchip scanner

Problems with HSUS and Katrina Rescue

(from: Michael Bell)

Hey Everyone,

I just got a disturbing call from Cat Crossing's Sheryl Green who has been in New Orleans for the past several days.

If you don't know Sheryl , you have missed an experience. She is a tough rescuer and a no nonsense person with a backround in law whose only agenda is to adopt, aid and succor cats and kittens..( as well as the occasional dog)... from the streets or our shelters. Sheryl has successfully defended many rescuers as well as individuals threatened by neighbors or The Department Of Animal Services in civil issues regarding their pets.

Sheryl says she received a call from an HSUS dispatcher in New Orleans to rescue some cats at a structure in the city of New Orleans. She went into the toxic flood zone and picked up (not trapped, picked up) 13 cats and put them in carriers. She drove back to Gonzales and there, Wayne Pacelle himself told her they were not taking in any cats that weren't attached to a specific address. ??????????

Pissed doesn't describe Sheryl's response.

She asked him what he suggested she do with the 13 cats in the carriers and Mr. Pacelle, The Director Of The Human Society Of The United States, told her to "release those cats where they came from".

Release those distressed, but obviously tame cats in that flooded toxic area to fend for themselves. What a sterling and humane idea!

You can call Sheryl At 818-921-0019 and verify this information for yourselves. Personally, I think it is time for an audit of HSUS (recorded by Merritt Clifton of " Animal People" Magazine to be worth well over $100 million in cash alone..excluding the alleged $12 mil taken in since Katrina).

If the claim by Sheryl is valid, then it is time for Mr. Pacelli to step down as director... And we should all be writing to HSUS for them to consider that action.

In the face of their strenuous defense of him and his actions, they must consider what this incident of callousness will mean to their future as one of the United States most powerful animal welfare organizations.

Winn Dixie and Tylertown

We just got back from NO and it is so hard to be here when you know you need to be there. We did not wait for all of the red tape and when we got there we were put to work as soon as we got out of the truck. We stayed for a week but it seemed like a day with all of the work that needs to be done. We brought back 7 dogs, 4 kittens, and 4 birds. But since we got back they have sent us two more groups so now we have 12 dogs. I really want to ask that if you are willing to foster a baby please be patient with those of us doing the paperwork.

We are trying to make sure they go to very good homes that understand that if the owners are found they will have to go back to them. I have had people say to me over and over well, you should just be glad we have a yard we could put him in! What? These babies have been thru the devil and I am not going to give them to someone to just put inb the yard and never see them. I do understand that the babies do need a yard to play in but I don't want to see them tied to trees like where we found alot of them. Also, I need your help.

I am trying to get in touch with some Akita rescue groups. We have 2 Akita's and a puppy that are from the same home but the oldest one is showing signs of aggression. I don't want her labeled a biter due to her just being under stress so if anyone knows of a foster home with parents willing to work with a special needs Akita please let me know. Thank you for all the work and support you guys put out there everyday.

Emergency Voicemail for Katrina victims and loved ones

A way for the phone less to communicate

Air America Public Voicemail 1-866-217-6255

Air America Radio's Public Voicemail is a way for disconnected people to communicate in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Here's how it works:

Call the toll-free number above, enter your everyday phone number, and then record a message. Other people who know your everyday phone number (even if it doesn't work anymore) can call Emergency Voicemail, enter the phone number they associate with you, and hear your message.

You can also search for messages left by people whose phone numbers you know.

Air America Radio will leave Public Voicemail in service for as long as this crisis continues. You can call it whenever you are trying to locate someone, or if you are trying to be found.

Obviously, for this to work, people need to know about it so please forward the number to as many people as you can. You can find out more about Katrina and the affected areas at http://www.airamericaradio.com/

Air America Radio brings you Emergency VoiceMail in conjunction with VoodooVox.

Swiffer Wet Jet - animal warning 16:47

Swiffer Wet Jet - animal warning....NOT TRUE!!!!

This is an urban legend. It is FALSE!!

Swiffer Wet Jet - animal warning

I received this from a different list. Please read if you use a Swiffer Wet Jet:

For those of us with animals......

I recently had a neighbor who had their 5-year old German shepherd dog put down due to liver failure. The dog was completely healthy until a few weeks ago. They had a necropsy done to see what the cause was. The liver levels were unbelievable, as if the dog had ingested poison of some kind. The dog is kept inside, and when he's outside, someone is with him, so the idea of him getting into something unknown was hard to believe.

My neighbor started going through all the items in the house. When he got to the Swiffer Wet jet he noticed, in very tiny print, a warning which stated "may be harmful to small children and animals." He called the company to ask what the contents of the cleaning agent are and was astounded to find out that antifreeze is one of the ingredients. (Actually he was told it's a compound which is one molecule away from antifreeze).

Therefore, just by the dog walking on the floor cleaned with the solution, then licking its own paws, it ingested enough of the solution to destroy its liver. Soon after his dog's death, his housekeepers' two cats also died of liver failure. They both used the Swiffer Wet Jet for quick cleanups on their floors.

EVEN IF YOU DO NOT OWN A PET PLEASE FORWARD THIS ON!

She was in the Storm heading back to Arkansas last night when I talked to her. fully loaded.. I'm really really worried about Mark and the Gang! Does anyone have any info? If so Please contact me offlist..

Last I heard Janet was in the hospital With a Bad case of Staph(rumour I hope?) Karen was coated with Chemical burns. I'm praying that everyone got out along with all the animals..

For those of you wanting to foster be prepared for huge Vet bills! I brought home Two Mastiff mix Puppies. As Well as a Black toy poodle mix. I have spent over $500 in Vet bills and still lost one of the pups. The Poodle(named Shammie after the Tech who helped SO much) is doing much better but is on a variety of meds.. All had to have more IV fliuds...

If anyone wants to adopt a non Katrina dog or Cat I work in a Shelter full of them Email me with the breed you are looking for.. We have some Pit mixes. Lab mixes, Labs.. Mutts, and get more in everyday. We charge $50 and that is for a fully vetted Dog or Cat.. Its nonprofit not a rescue as we are a county Shelter. We Do Euthanize!

I have a cute little black Foxy little mix that was found in the woods tied to a tree. She is heart worm Neg... also a Lovely Yellow Lab that Does have Heart worms but we are trying to raise money to have him treated .. He's Awesome! If anyone is interested contact me offlist..

How to fix Red Cross if you're truly concerned 01:06

How to fix Red Cross if you're truly concerned

We have handled many evacuations for fire reasons in our area. The Red Cross never calls us. We just show up outside with crates and food and fresh water for the animals and we take them to our area that is safe for the duration of the evacuations. All people must fill out papers and sign to agree to pick up the pets. These services are provided free of charge. Sure a few have taken advantage but many many more have been reunited with there fur family. They are asked to leave a piece of clothing and let us know what type of food they feed. They visit and spend quality time with there pets daily it is better than sitting in a shelter all day worrying for both pets and people a like. Some people choose not to take us up on this and we give them crates and food to get them where ever they are going to. We have had this in effect for many years and it works great. If our town can accomplish this from donations. Why can't the big businesses (HSUS) have come up with something similar with all there money?
