Dear Friends at Kinship Circle,

I'm sorry to take your time by replying. It has come to my attention that rescued Katrinia animals are supposed to be sent to our very high kill, filthy Los Angeles shelters, where they will no doubt be neglected and probably killed. Please alert all the agencies you are aware of to this danger and divert animals from Los Angeles. Information about Los Angeles contacts is pasted below.

Thank you for all you're doing,

Priya Gehm

Dear Honorable Mayor Villaraigosa:

I'm very distressed to learn that Los Angeles Animal Services (LAAS) will be allocating kennel space at the South Central facility that rightfully belongs to the lost, stray, and abandoned companion animals of Los Angeles, to animals with owners displaced from hurricane Katrina. This is completely inappropriate. The human and animal victims of hurricane Katrina should receive assistance from agencies conceived to provide such assistance, such as the Humane Society, and from individuals that are able to assist them. If people want to help, and they should, they can donate funds or their time to the appropriate agencies designed to assist in these emergencies. To allocate space at a HIGH-KILL animal shelter will result in a sure death sentence for EVEN MORE companion animals within the L.A. system. This result should be obvious.

The South Central facility is a killing machine with an insatiable appetite, definitely not a boarding facility. Infectious diseases run ramped within the facility and the solution of choice by the veterinarian is to kill anything that sneezes. Just how do they think they are going to prevent these animals that have owners from contracting disease? I am also aware that animals being transported from other areas require a clean bill of health and a health certificate before traveling. Coming from New Orleans, it's quite likely that some of these poor animals will have HEARTWORM. Are they going to be tested for heartworm before traveling to Los Angeles? Is the shelter prepared to isolate them and provide the costly treatment for heartworm? We don't need a heartworm epidemic in Los Angeles.

Further, why are we extending resources to others to the detriment of our own animals? Our animals are suffering and being killed in vast proportions. ! ; Do they not matter?

It is obvious that no thought whatsoever was given to this decision. Just when I think that things cannot get any worse for the companion animals in the City of Los Angeles shelters, Guerdon Stuckey makes another asinine decision much to the detriment of the animals. This has to stop! Get rid of him! He's an idiot! He is truly a liability to the City of Los Angeles and it is an injustice to the animals to have him on-board. In the private sector he would have been canned early on!!

Keep your promise.

Lamar Dixon - getting dogs out

Date: Tue Sep 20, 2005 7:09 am
Subject: Lamar Dixon - getting dogs out
From: Bridgett Miller

Regarding Lamar Dixon, Myself and another Southern States Rottweiler Rescue member have been working out at Lamar Dixon for the past 10 days (usually every other day) and we have not seen all of what has been described in some of the emails. I'm not saying it isn't happening but as far as animals being turned away; that has seldom happened; just last night over 200 dogs were brought in! Today, myself and my friend and fellow rescuer worked Export and assisted w/ the Vetting of over 150 dogs today ALONE! Dogs are being walked, fed, cleaned, watered etc.....

I do agree with the Local Rescue comment (about dogs being shipped out even if they are owned or rescues want to take them out) - I belong to SSRR -Rottie REscue and we aren't allowed to take out the Rotties, yet they agreed to ship them to North Carolina- at least that group is workign w/ us as American Rottweiler Club/ ARC is being great about trying to get them OUT and then eventually to rescue groups.

What I find is that we MUST try to work with the system- as these dogs MUST leave Lamar Dixon -being in a shelter environment is at least a little better than being in the Staging area at Lamar Dixon.

As of yesterday (Monday), Pitts were being tagged to go - jsut not the dog aggressive ones.
