MUST READ THIS - U R G E N T- MEDICAL EMERGENCY!!!!

Katie,

This is an emergency! We have a Hurricane Katrina Lab that is ill, and we cannot seem to get him any better.

We heard that there was something spreading to the dogs from raccoons and is causing the dogs to have a severe upper respiratory infection.

Could you cross-post this ASAP, and have anyone that knows what they are treating the dogs with to call me at: 423-341-3991.

The dog is going downhill fast and has only been treated with the drug Baytril. We was still eating and drinking yesterday!!

Please HELP!!! Anyone know how to get in touch with the Louisiana Vets???

911! Over A Hundred Animals A Day And No Set System for Vet Care, and Essential Hardware Supplies to get HSSM shelter Up & Running.

"FEMA is pulling VMAT off our project leaving me with over a hundred animals a day and no set system for Vet care to service them. I am up to my eyeballs in bureaucratic crap trying to get these animals taken care of so please bear with me.

“VMAT is being demobilized today. I was notified of the order yesterday. We will be needing Vets and vet techs to volunteer here in Gulfport to attend to the animals that are coming through us.

Please email me names, contact info and dates of availability on anyone who can help us. We are going to need help for at least the next two months."

Above is this morning plea from the President of HSSM(Tara High) to me, please contact me if you know anyone who can help.

1) I am a volunteer for another rescue group in Los Angeles, CA. I am helping Tara High/HSSM to reply e mails, phone calls to reduce the bottleneck, and get 911 resources for HSSM.

2) Shelter HAD a capacity of sheltering 300 animals BEFORE Katrina, but HSSM was damage badly, they NEED (not want/not wishing)the items NOW, to get the shelter up to take all these animals.

DON'T OVERFEED/WATER!

DON'T OVERFEED/WATER!
by muttleyray1, 9/18/05 10:22 ET

For people going in to get their pets: they will of course be very hungry and thirsty. But be careful not to overfeed or water them!!! That can lead to vomiting and too much vomiting can cause problems.

Give them SMALL amounts of room-temp water and food. Preferably dry food because they will be tempted to wolf it down and you don't want them to snork down a large amount of rich food. If you can, put the kibble in a muffin pan (a bit in each cup) or spread out on a cookie sheet or other clean flat surface so they can't eat really fast. Feed every hour or so. Give water more frequently, but hold the bowl and take it away if they are drinking too fast.

Animals need to drink about one cup of water for every ten pounds of body weight every day. Animals who've been dehydrated of course need more, but try not to overwater them and don't give them really cold water!

If they are overheated you can sponge some COOL water on them, especially the belly and head.

If they are in really bad condition they should of course see a vet immediately if possible. If they are too far gone to eat/drink on their own they need to see a vet IMMEDIATELY! And every animal should go in for a check-up as soon as possible.

This doesn't apply to people leaving food for animals they can't catch. Just have to do the best possible for them...

LSU Update Shelter

Shelter Closing Information

The LSU Emergency Animal Shelter will stop accepting new animals on September 30, 2005 and the operation will close on October 15, 2005. Owners must reclaim their animals by September 30, 2005, or give consent for foster care or adoption. If you need help finding a temporary foster home for your pet, or to release your pet for permanent adoption, please call 225-578-6111, or in Baton Rouge, come by Parker Coliseum and ask for details at the Fostering Desk.

As of Wednesday September 14, 2005, the Parker Coliseum was housing 1,064 companion animals, including 641 dogs, 391 cats, and assorted pigs, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, hamsters, gerbils, mice, tortoises, and birds. Most of these pets are being cared for by volunteers; owners who are staying here in town are caring for 120 of the animals.

Daily admission of animals is still exceeding the numbers being discharged to their owners, but people and their pets are being reunited every day. To date, almost 300 pets from our shelter and their families are back together again.

TYLERTOWN NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

TYLERTOWN NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
by manchmal, 9/18/05 10:17 ET
(from an email I received last night)

KATRINA SANCTUARY PROJECT

Our property at 115 Obed Magee Road in Tylertown, Mississippi may not be the most comfortable place to make a difference, but it certainly has abundant heart!

Committed people from all over the country have arrived and are hard at work on this grasroots labor of love for animals. Veterinarians, vet techs, contractors and animal care professionals have worked alongside people of all professions, from all across the country. Additional kennels are being built, and more cat housing is on the way.

As of this Friday evening, many tired members of our core volunteer crew returned home to friends, family and work. WE NOW URGENTLY NEED REFRESHED VOLUNTEERS, WILLING TO WALK DOGS CLEAN CAGES AND HELP WITH ANIMAL CARE. Veterinarians, vet techs and people with DIY experience are particularly welcome.

At last contact a few hours ago, 75 dogs were headed to our door and we were down to 12 volunteers. All of these animals were recently saved in grassroots rescue expeditions in New Orleans. These survivors need TLC. They'd love to meet you.

Come to: Humane Society of Louisiana Emergency Shelter 115 Obed Magee Road Tylertown, MS 39667

Don't forget - we DO NOT have comfortable housing (or any housing) for volunteers. You must treat your volunteer experience like an extreme camping holiday, and come with supplies to be totally self sufficient. We do have electricity and running water and a few port-a-lets, but our building cannot fit any more sleepers. Tents are recommended, or try to book in a hotel in Tylertown or nearby McComb, which is about a half an hour from the site.

Need directions? Try http://www.mapquest.com/ . Do you need confirmation from us before you go? No, not over the next several days, because we've been told hands are urgently needed. If you are planning a trip, let us know to expect you, however, so we can better plan activities. Need a contact at the site? Ask for Johnna Harris or Jeff Dorson. We do not have a land line phone, but we've been successful in begging the telephone company to hook us up soon. We originally had expected to wait several weeks, due to the demand for services!

Volunteers with cameras are encouraged to bring them, so we can document the extraordinary effort everyone is making. You can also help us photograph our incoming pets.

I'm back for now...was in Gonzales, etc. Those of you on here for a while remember me. FINALLY got some sleep. I still want to help here in any way I can. It seems like the thing I'm best at now is some rumor control about Lamar-Dixon/Gonzales, as well as helping people figure out a place to go volunteer at. Please send anything pertaining to that my way, and I'll do my best. I'm in contact with people on the ground at Lamar-Dixon/Gonzales. I'm going to paste in here a request from Tricia, another board member, who is at Gonzales. Please bump.--

Listen up ya'll!I am going to be leaving soon to go back out to Gonzales. Not many familiar faces in the forum this morning, so I'm leaving you two with a task. The girl that is staying with me from Wisconsin just got back from working the night shift at Gonzales. She said they are in desperate need of volunteers to help during the night. BUT, you must arrive there by 7:30pm. Upon leaving, your car may be checked...they have been having a problem with volunteers taking animals. I'm telling you, they need help in a major way at night. They have no help at night!

Here is a list of items that are desperately needed at Lamar Dixon in Gonzales...

THEY NEED LATEX GLOVES, THICK RUBBER GLOVES FOR CLEANING, SPRAY BOTTLE CLEANER WITH BLEACH, REGULAR BOTTLES OF BLEACH, TOWELS, PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS OR DOGGIE POOP BAGS, SMALL AND LARGE GARBAGE BAGS, RAWHIDE BONES FOR DOGS (ALL SIZES), NAME TAGS FOR VOLUNTEERS, DUCT TAPE, PENS, STAPLES, STAPLERS, PLASTIC CONTAINERS TO KEEP PAPERWORK SORTED, PROTECTIVE PLASTIC COVERS FOR PAPERWORK ON KENNELS. THIS IS DIRECTLY FROM THE FRONT LINE! PLEASE SEND THESE ITEMS ASAP!

Emily you may know of a contact there to send supplies to. I will try to find out today and call you so you can get the word out of where to send stuff!

Again, they are in desperate need of people to help at night. If they happen to get there after 8pm, tell them to tell the guards that they are staying on the premises. Sleeping there, etc. Or else they may be turned away at night.

Thanks for ya'lls help! Love ya,Tricia

Please freely distribute my phone and email: my name is Emily.

URGENT: We can fly 150-200 animals out for fostering
        and care in California
by sfattorney, 9/18/05 2:09 ET

"To follow up on my earlier post, I want to reiterate what it is that we need, and need by tomorrow or MOnday as we have plane ready to go:

We need a critical mass of animals in one location to move out of state - either out of LA or out of MS. We can help with transport from their current location to the closest airport too, if needed. The animals will be flown to California in a Continental jet configured for animal transport in the cabin area or in a military plane also safe for animals to fly in. They will be taken to no kill shelters for foster and hopefully for owners to claim (we will pay for the animal to be reunited with its owner). We are also willing to fly animals to OTHER states, and to other shelters if it so happens that the particular rescue group who has the dogs that we are shipping has already arranged for them to go to a particular place other than California. The only requirement we have is that that other shelter in some other state be a no kill shelter. We are getting nowhere with the Gonzales bureaucracy and as of tonight do not have 150-200 dogs ready for us to fly out on Monday. or Tuesday of this week. If anyone can put me in touch with someone on the ground who has that number of dogs in one place who are stabilized enough to travel, we can make it happen. They cannot be right off the street since all of them coming in now need vet attention after being out there so long. We don't want to fly out dogs who will die in the air.

Since the planes cost 50k to fly one way, they have to make sure the plane is FULL, which means no less than around 150 animals. Otherwise, it becomes too expensive to transport by air. Please let me know if you have contacts who can amass this number of cats and dogs - perhaps 100 dogs and 50 cats? We really want to make this happen! Thank you."

Update:

1. sfattorney is being put in touch tomorrow morning with "Disaster Response Animal Rescue" @ Winn Dixie on Chef Menteur. USDA has authorized them to transport

3. Post up to date leads in this thread of shelters a) within LA & MS that haven't evacuated their pre-Katrina animals.

4. What are the MS quarantine specifics?

5. Less known "independent" shelters?

Hi. My name is Amanda, my apartment is near the intersection of Napoleon and Constance, Uptown. My boyfriend and I are returning next Wednesday to visit our apartment (September 21st, I believe).PLEASE let me know if you'd like for me to go check on your pets for you. I will do ANYTHING I can to help, including knocking down doors/windows. I have a VW Jetta, and I'm planning on packing in as many homeless animals as I can.

Here in Mississippi, I'm staying at a large 2-story home, and there's room for more than my 4 cats and 1 dog.It breaks my heart to think about the pets left behind. I know it's very late in the game, but -- like I said -- I will do anything to help. I request no compensation -- in fact, I will flat out refuse it if offered (politely, of course). I have the animals in mind. So ... if there is any abandoned animal that you know of -- ask your friends -- let me know before next Wednesday. Please do not hesitate to ask for help. I will do my best, I promise. Write me at mailto:torigirl211@yahoo-dot-com

Noah's Wish on Donations
by Lessa4, 9/18/05 5:10 ET

"We are at the point now that we have adequate supplies for the immediate future, but we are trying to make sure that we establish a steady stream of supplies on an organized, regular basis. WE ARE NOT TURNING DOWN OFFERS OF DONATED SUPPLIES, but we now have to make sure that the supplies and equipment you have toiled to collect get to the site and are put to proper use. Excess supplies at the site create a burden as putting the supplies under roof would displace animals, and allowing supplies to sit outside exposes them to the elements. All of you have worked too hard to let your supplies be wasted because they were ruined by weather. Because of the hurricane’s wrath, it is difficult to locate an intact warehouse to serve as a central supply facility. We are working on this problem.

Fortunately, retail outlets are reopening their doors with restocked shelves. The donation of gift cards from the national chain stores will not only provide us with a means of purchasing supplies and equipment on demand – exactly what we need, when we need it and where we need it, but will also pump money into the local economy of the ravaged area.

I realize that it is frustrating to wait for the “go, but please remember if several trucks of supplies arrive at the facility at one time, our volunteers have to direct attention away from the animals and toward unloading and storing supplies. This is going to be a long term operation and your supplies will be needed.

Please continue to support the work of Noah’s Wish and please take time to prepare yourself and the animals in your care should disaster strike. Your efforts are paying off for the animals. "

Monetary donations can be made through their website at http://www.noahswish.org/

do you know pit bulls?... you can help

Date: Sun, 18 Sep 2005 02:30:37 -0000
Subject: do you know pit bulls?... you can help

As you probably know, pit bull constitute a huge percentage of the dogs in the Katrina shelters now.

An established, reputable pit bull rescuer (Leah Purcell/Spindletop Rescue in Houston) is pulling pit bulls from shelters in La. These are dogs that have chips and/or other forms of identification demonstrating that they are loved and owned by responsible people. Leah hopes to re-unite these dogs with their owners, and she has already been able to do this with a few.

She needs experienced people to foster these excellent dogs for a few months as she searches for the owners.

If you can help by fostering, please call her: 713-614-2410.

Because of the concern about pit bulls getting into the wrong hands, I suggest that any of you who want to verify Leah's credentials either ask any of the main Katrina rescue groups, or to contact any of the officers of the Staffordshire Terrier Club of America or the National American Pit Bull Terrier Association (you can Google the information), the AST and APBT parent clubs.

Financial contributions would also be welcome. Spindletop's website with contact information is:

http://www.spindletoppitbullrefuge.org/contact.html

Feel free to pass this message on; Leah has strict standards for what people she would accept as foster parents, so there is no danger to the dogs if some miscreant happens to see it.

You can also contact me for more details.
