Foster homes needed for Katrina fur victims

Sent: Saturday, September 17, 2005 7:59 PM
Re: foster homes needed for Katrina fur victims

Just got home about an hour ago (Saturday eve at 8 pm) from Hurricane Katrina area in Gaitier, Ms (just West of Biloxi). You can say and plead all you want. I was there. They will NOT release the animals. We took down a trailer load of cat and dog traps for the Humane Society (US) located at the Jackson County Animal Shelter. Totally disorganized, rude, were not allowed anywhere near the shelter after we had driven all day and night since we picked them up at the manufacturer in Denton, NC and rushed them down there. Never saw one homeless animal in the area. We were prepared to stay 3 days to help. Didn't want our help. So we turned around and came home.

We knew there were certain things we couldn't do but bathe, comfort, clean cages, anything, we were willing to do. We also took down medical supplies from area vets and pharmacies and food donated. We are very disheartened regarding the reception we got. There is plenty of gas and food down where we were if anyone is worried about making the trip. It's even a bit cheaper than here. We had several places lined up for a load of animals to bring back--Humane Society in Catawba Co, Burke County Friends for Animals was willing to take some, we had room for some here and another local rescue was willing to take in a number. So we'll do what we're best at--Saving Carolina Rescue Animals to Caring Homes (S.C.R.A.T.C.H.)

Do you know anyone who'll foster a dog or dogs? ....These people will deliver to the door. They'll bring the animal anywhere.

Over 200 dogs and over 150 cats so far, they have been put in one TEMPORARY place for now. I am told every one of them has had vaccinations and are in fine health, other than some scratched up some, lost, sad, confused and hungry. There are people there who are ready and waiting to drive these dogs and cats to ANYWHERE they need to go, I repeat, ANYWHERE, they will transport them ANYWHERE.

They said they can hold on to them for a bit longer, not sure how much longer and said MANY of them will have to be EUTHANIZED if they are not taken somewhere soon.

CONTACT THIS PERSON DIRECTLY, it does not matter what time, middle ofthe nite, it does not matter, please help these poor precious animals.

They are also asking for ANY kind of donations for the animals, money, dog cat food, etc.

Help needed in Plaquemines Parish

Date: Sat, 17 Sep 2005 20:44:16 -0500 (Central Daylight Time)
Subject: Help needed in Plaqs Parish
Received this from another yahoo group:
Petfinder site for P.A.W.S. in Belle Chase LA.

Our animals in Plaquemines Parish need help. The parish is trying to rescue all the animals they can, but we need lots of volunteers to come and help feed&walk the dogs.WE need more runs or the large kennel runs, because the dogs are being put in together with females in heat and the males are fighting.

Is their any groups are business people that can donate kennel are put up runs for the dogs until we can get these animals moved to a better location. The parish wants to give people time to claim their dogs and we just don't have the room to keep them separated. We also need groups that will take cats, it's going to be a long time before we can get adoptions for the cats down in Plaquemines Parish.

Please Help Us.

by savethemnow7, 9/17/05 21:51 ET

IF YOU CAN GO ASAP:I know Eric right now has about 20 people BUT NEEDS SOOO MANY MORE TO SET UP THE FEEDING STATIONS IN VARIOUS AREAS OF NOLA- if you can go ASAP please email me mailto:atsanaart@aol-dot-com Eric is doing a different kind of work- they are setting up thousands of feeding stations on a mass scale to try to preserve animal lives until more resources for rescue arrive or until owners come back.

Please if you can go to NOLA please email me and I will give you his contact information- they are always on the go and always in different locations so best way is to get yourself ready, be self-sufficient bring extra gas-gloves-wader boots/insect repellant and anything else that makes sence- you will be sleeping in your car- and bring lots of water(food they have) and feeding containers(anything flat capable of holding water-with food they improvise and just throw it on the ground)-cheap ones as many as you can fit in your car/van.

Please just email me with your phone # and i will clarify it more and give you erics # so that as soon as your down there in the area he will tell you where he is at that specific time and tell you where to go to meet him.

TYLERTOWN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AGAIN!

Sept. 17, 2005

KATRINA SANCTUARY PROJECT

Our property at 115 Obed Magee Road in Tylertown, Mississippi may not be the most comfortable place to make a difference, but it certainly has abundant heart!

Committed people from all over the country have arrived and are hard at work on this grasroots labor of love for animals. Veterinarians, vet techs, contractors and animal care professionals have worked alongside people of all professions, from all across the country. Additional kennels are being built, and more cat housing is on the way.

As of this Friday evening, many tired members of our core volunteer crew returned home to friends, family and work. WE NOW URGENTLY NEED REFRESHED VOLUNTEERS, WILLING TO WALK DOGS CLEAN CAGES AND HELP WITH ANIMAL CARE. Veterinarians, vet techs and people with DIY experience are particularly welcome.

At last contact a few hours ago, 75 dogs were headed to our door and we were down to 12 volunteers. All of these animals were recently saved in grassroots rescue expeditions in New Orleans. These survivors need TLC. They'd love to meet you.

Come to:
Humane Society of Louisiana Emergency Shelter
115 Obed Magee Road
Tylertown, MS 39667

Don't forget - we DO NOT have comfortable housing (or any housing) for volunteers. You must treat your volunteer experience like an extreme camping holiday, and come with supplies to be totally self sufficient. We do have electricity and running water and a few port-a-lets, but our building cannot fit any more sleepers. Tents are recommended, or try to book in a hotel in Tylertown or nearby McComb, which is about a half an hour from the site.

Need directions? Try www.mapquest.com. Do you need confirmation from us before you go? No, not over the next several days, because we've been told hands are urgently needed. If you are planning a trip, let us know to expect you, however, so we can better plan activities. Need a contact at the site? Ask for Johnna Harris or Jeff Dorson. We do not have a land line phone, but we've been successful in begging the telephone company to hook us up soon. We originally had expected to wait several weeks, due to the demand for services!

Volunteers with cameras are encouraged to bring them, so we can document the extraordinary effort everyone is making. You can also help us photograph our incoming pets.

This is in response to my earlier plea this morning asking where a trucker should call to go there. She misunderstood my original question but this is good information for the future for coordinating.

I am overseeing all the transportation, I am setting up a coordinator in each state and that person will be who you will contact. I need to get the information below on any vehicles that will be used to transport animals.

Thank you so much for stepping up and offering to do this. Here is what we plan:

  • We are qualifying foster families in your state
  • We will find one person from your state to organize all good people like you who'd like to be part of the convoy.
  • Once we match foster families to all of the animals here, we sill set the date to have you and the others come to Louisiana
  • The coordinator from your state (if you're good at these things, let me know, you can be that person!), will then arrange with all the foster families to meet in one central location where the animals will be turned over.
  • That coordinator will be responsible for follow-up on all foster animals to assure they are being cared for and if an owner from LA has located their animal in your state (all animals are registered first before leaving LA to enable reunions!)

Please send me the following:

Your name, address, and all phone numbers
The shelter you are associated with if there is one
What kind of vehicle do you have?
Is it air-conditioned?
Is it a truck and stock trailer? How big?
You will have to pay for all of your own expenses and gas, is this o.k.?
You may be needed on a moment's notice
(when the state vet releases the animals)
  can you react quickly?

The Louisiana SPCA would like to keep all animals close to home to attempt to reunite them. They are allowing placement into foster care/shelters within 100 miles of LA. Once a 30-60 day period ends and no more animals are reunited with their guardians, then we assume, nationwide fostering needs will occur. Check the http://www.pasadosafehaven.org/ for updates.

We are still accepting foster applications IF they are needed after that wait period.

Thank you for offering to help - we WILL be back in touch as this progresses!

For the animals,

Magda,

Pasado's Safe Haven Volunteer

Update from Gonzales...I'm Here
by chelle1207, 9/17/05 20:41 ET

Hey everyone....didn't get to post yesterday because internet was down but it's back now. Let me assure all of you that the situation at Gonzales is well under control. They moved at least 50 cats out of the area I was in today and I'm not sure how many dogs. That's just one barn. They are moveing the animals out but they are only allowing organizations that can house them to take them for obvious reasons. There are so many org.'s there from all over the country. FEMA, the Nat'l Guard and many, many gov. agencies are also there. They DO NOT need any more public donations of supplies but if you want to donate money I'm sure they can use that. They do need volunteers to replace the ones leaving. Most people stay about a week.Today...FEMA set up a huge tent area that has air conditioning(yeah!!!) and they will have vans to take the volunteers there for breaks. They also set up cots for people who don't want to sleep in a small tent. It's extremely HOT so it's a welcome relief. It is a sad situation here because there are so many animals...dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, birds, you name it. They are being cared for and everyone here is totally dedicated to giving them love and doing whatever we can to for them. I haven't had time to take pictures but I hope to be able to do that tomorrow.Keep up the good work here and I will update you again tomorrow or the next day. Michelle

I volunteered to foster some dogs and received a plea for help. I met some people from the Muttshak at the staging center in NOLA at the Winn Dixie.

In the meantime please send out our plea for assistance. We need 1,000 crates to house the dogs coming into Baton Rouge. Without crates (homes) we cannot save them. If you could mail this link to as many people as possible I would really appreciate it! We don't have enough volunteers to do outreach!

Subject: From the ground in Louisiana - a personal rescue report

From Gonzalez LA - On the ground... Amy Mall called again to day to report a few more volunteers came today, but there are still not enough. A few people are finding their dogs - not many. They have been able to reach some of the individuals whose dogs are there, but no one comes for the dogs as a rule. Many of these dogs were beloved house pets. They know what they are missing, they are terrified, and the conditions are awful. More dogs came in today. It is VERY hot where the dogs are and Amy was on her way to WalMart, Home Depot, and Lowes to find large box fans. Here is a link to where she is, with updated news as of this morning. If you can help, the information is there as to how to go, how to donate, or just how to write thank you notes to those who are there. Please send this to others you know.

FIRSTHAND UPDATE ON NEWLY ARRIVED "TEAMS" INTO PLAQUEMINES PARISH, DR. HERBERT DVM IS DOING A WONDERFUL JOB! ITS A NO KILL SHELTER AND HAVE ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS FOR NOW...EVEN THE NATIONAL GUARD IS HELPING BIG TIME PUTTING UP MAKESHIFT FENCES FOR RUNS.....NEEDED IS BASIC SUPPLIES SO AT CURRENT THE SITUATION IS FORTUNATELY UNDER CONTROL.....THERE WAS ONE HEAVILY OILED DOG THAT DID NOT SURVIVE AND ONE DOG WITH A PRIOR ILLNESS THAT WAS ALREADY WEAKENED UNABLE TO SURVIVE THE STORM...BUT ON THE WHOLE....SEEMS OK FOLKS.......WHEW

SUPPLIES SUPPLIES SUPPLIES FOR THE SHELTER AND NEEDY RESIDENTS NOW ENTERING THE AREA.......I HEARD FROM THE TEAM NOW UNLOADING, THEY HAVE A NICE SET UP..........

At this time he has some food, plenty of good water, accessibility to medical supplies through other vets, and volunteers to help. He also has about 200 dogs and 30 cats with more coming all the time. The newer arrivals are oil soaked so he has that to deal with as well. He is running it as a no-kill facility and expects that it will be needed for at least 2-3 months since 2/3 of his parish is under water. He also said that he is distributing supplies to returning families and can act as a local distribution center to other vets in other parishes in the area. So sounds like he can really use our help. He said he needs ANYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF TO HOUSE, FEED, TRANSPORT, BATH and OTHERWISE CARE FOR the animals. He is also micro chipping each animal to track them. The list he rolled of the top of his head is as follows:

Dog/Cat Food
Leashs / Collars / Bowls
Collapsible Kennels
2-Oster Dog Clippers
Shampoo
Dawn Dishwashing Liquid
Gojo (Hand Degreaser He Can Use On Animal Coats)
Chain Link Fencing / Posts / Etc. (If He Can Get It)
Tarps
Bungie Cords

We are arranging for Erics people to pick up from there because they are all over the place and don't have a shipping address themselves - or anyone close in the area - remember 1 bowl you can save so many lives -10 bowls even more lives - think big here and think out of the box - don't buy expensive pet bowls - use common sense and buy more at cheap places anything that looks like it will contain food and water and not spill over on the street - big tin ones that you bake in - keep that in mind and don't ignore this post.

Update Volunteer Information

Sent: Friday, September 16, 2005 8:55 PM
Subject: Update Volunteer Information

Anyone who is planning to go down to New Orleans this weekend or later this week please complete this volunteer form at http://www.petrescuevolunteers.com/. We are compiling a list of volunteers and showing you the best route to take to get down there, the directions, and how you want to help out. We are taking normal people who do not have professional training!!! We are directly working with the Humane Society at a second location at the New Orleans Winn Dixie Animal staging area. We need more volunteers down there feeding and walking dogs, providing water, cleaning crates, and providing TLC to these poor animals!!! Contact Lauren at swayball20 mailto:swayball20@yahoo-dot-com for directions and/or more info.

Here are a few photos of what is happening down there. The first two are of a Doberman puppy who was rescued in a boat with his mother, who is in the third picture with the owner. The owner got into the city pretending to be an energy contractor, and then contacted the EMT/HSUS duo that is working with us doing water rescue. He got them to take him to his house, and found the mother in good shape, but the puppy barely alive. He has chemical burns, open, oozing sores, and puss coming out of his eyes (common in a lot of the animals we find, even those who otherwise look relatively healthy), and was barely breathing and of course severly dehydrated and malnourished. I took the pictures at our triage area where we have our shelter set-up. The vet tech there is great, but she is a volunteer, so I hope she is able to stay for awhile. Very sick animals go right to a fully licensed vet on the other side of town, so we don't always have a chance to get photos of them, but I was able to get this one.

Please note that although most animals we find are not in this bad of a condition, that is because such sick, dying animals are the harder ones to find; they are stuck in houses, often at attic level, with no way to get out, so they can't be seen wandering the streets and lured away. Withe the water levels at where they are, and street signs washed away, those in boats can't really search by address requests. There are thousands of animals in such condition or worse who are dying slow, painful, awful deaths, and thousands more are already dead. Out of around 50,000 animals, only around 6000 have been rescued. The rest are either dead, or are still waiting for their owners to return while they suffer in the heat and toxic fumes and sludge with little or no water or food.

Photos below were taken Sept 13 by myself and Kendra (who is back down to NO after only a 2 day break!!)

They need help down there!!

list of things they need include:
Waders
Rubber Boots
Sunblock
Mosquito Repellent
Non Perishables
Gallons and gallons of water
Tools (Axes, Hammers, Wire Cutters)
Rubber Gloves
Handi wipes
Lysol wipes
Purel or other antibiotic hand wash
!!!WIRE CRATES !!!(the plastic ones are ok if you have but it is hot
and some are melting)
Flashlights
Batteries
Lanterns
2-way radios
Maps of the area
First Aid Kit
Collars of all different sizes
Leashes
Canned cat food (to lure cats)
Dog food (they’ll probably eat anything right now)

(I'm sending this for Tricia -- she was on this board a lot and is in Gonzales. This gives a good summary of the conditions there. EMily)

Hi all! I worked at Lamar Dixon today. All of the animals are being well taken care of. We cleaned cages, walked dogs and loved on them. It was very rewarding...thanks Emily! All I can tell you is that they are shipping animals to other shelters to make room for ones coming in. There was a group from California taking a bunch of cats (dogs too, but not sure). Anyway, I asked if they were a no-kill org. and she told me that CA doesn't kill anything! YEH! Also there was a group there from Dallas that was taking all of the kittens. When I say kittens...some are only days old. I wanted to scoop them all up and take them home.

The dogs seem to be in pretty good health. There are plenty Pit Bulls, German Sheppards and Labs. There are also a lot of pure bred dogs. A black Shnauzer, several Yorkies. Some are beat up looking, some are skinny and some are absolutely beautiful! There were a bunch of those I wanted to take home too! They get fed, watered and walked quite a few times a day. It's funny because the young spunky ones want to walk you! I would take them out and walk them and love on them. I was also able to give them treats and baby talk them.

There are tons of animals. 5 barns full. There are notes on some that they shouldn't be moved because their owner has claimed them. They also have notes that say "Surrendered by owner." People were walking around looking for their pets. DON'T BE DISCOURAGED if you don't find your pet there. Check the websites. Get your pet. Many places in New Orleans will be letting residents back in permanently starting on Monday. If you left your pet behind, stop at Lamar Dixon in Gonzales on your way. You know you will be passing right by it! They need to be picked up. It is very hot out there for these guys and they need some love.

I was very overwhelmed by the volunteers. I didn't meet very many from LA, but a lot from everywhere else. I worked with a young lady today and her and her dad were sleeping in their car. They are from Wisconsin. So, I offered for them to stay with me at my apartment. They are enjoying the air and hot shower!

I took time to walk around before I left and thank everyone in sight for helping us here in LA. I know I appreciate it!

I did find one dog. His name is Chewy and he's a Pekingnese. His address on his collar is 3532 Charles Dr., Chalmette. He wants his family! He's so sad and hot! If you know anything about this little fella, email me mailto:attltucker2005@yahoo-dot-com

No Patches! Sorry! I think there is a possibility that Patches got away and headed back to the Quarter. What do ya'll think?

Thanks again and if you live near Gonzales...go help. Even if it's for an hour! They just need love right now!

ON ADOPTING

NOLA.com 11603 (http://www.nola.com/forums/animals/index.ssf?artid=36873)
ON ADOPTING
by manchmal, 9/17/05 11:20 ET
(please bump)

I was working at Lamar-Dixon Gonzales and have been in contact with people on the ground there, and I want to make something clear to everyone who is concerned about adopting animals: the SPCA has said that until October 15, no animals will be adopted out. That information can, of course, change, but there seems to be a lot of misinformation out there and I think I can help clarify.

If you are seeing people say "my state got 10 dogs," what you are seeing are dogs that were OWNER SURRENDERED. This means that the dogs came in from the field in New Orleans with a signed surrender form from their owners saying "I don't want/can't take my animal."

They ARE shipping animals out of state, but I can assure everyone that they are doing this VERY carefully, and in special situations. Situations I have seen/heard of: the animals are very sick and need to get out of the heat and go to a dedicated veterinary clinic, the animals are very young and are in danger of getting diseases (kittens, sometimes), the animals are owner surrendered and are going for adoption, etc. These animals are ONLY going to groups under the legal auspices of Louisiana -- that is, they legally must hold then until the 15th of October. When I was there, I saw them take out about 30 Rottweilers to the American Rottweiler Association. The woman in charge of that group was brilliant -- and as soon as the dogs got to their destination they were, like all the others, put on petfinder so that their owners could find them. The lower they can keep the population at the shelters (Gonzales included) the more animals they can take in. They are constantly balancing this with the need ot keep animals whose owners are coming to get them in the area, as convenient as possible.

There is the ideal situation, which is that there would be a huge facility with air conditioning and hundreds of vets to keep all these animals in the same place. But this is a huge crisis, of war-like proportions, and sometimes the next best thing has to do.

If you are interested in adopting, DON'T GIVE UP: I can assure you that after that October 15 deadline, this country will be flooded with animals, and you are to be endlessly thanked for being willing to open up your home to these guys. Petfinder.com is the absolute best resource for finding animals to adopt, and finding animals that could be yours. Use it tirelessly, and keep checking -- there are literally thousands and thousands of pieces of paper that are waiting to be input.

Please, everyone on this board, help with rumors on adoption so that we don't cause owners any more stress thinking that someone may have adopted their beloved animal. If I can talk to anyone/be of any assistance, don't hesitate to call me.

All the best,

ASPCA addresses rumors...

ASPCA ADDRESSES MORE RUMORS As misinformation about rescue efforts continue to circulate, we’ll keep you updated with the facts. You can also read our Katrina FAQ for additional information.

  • The Rumor: Animals are being euthanized at Lamar-Dixon, the staging area for animals in Gonzales, LA.
    • The Facts: Rebecca Rhoades, D.V.M., executive director of the Kauai, Hawaii, Humane Society and an HSUS consultant, is in charge of euthanasia procedures and protocol. There have been significant problems with aggressive animals—most of them fighting dogs—but to date, less than 150 animals have been euthanized for extreme aggression or serious health issues.
  • The Rumor: No animals are being released from Lamar-Dixon.
    • The Facts: Hundreds of animals have been transferred from Lamar-Dixon to other shelters to make room for incoming animals. These shelters include the Houston SPCA, Calcasieu Parish Animal Service in Lake Charles, Novato, CA-based Marin Humane Society and the Humane Society of Broward County in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. A total of 290 animals were transferred from Lamar-Dixon on Wednesday, September 14, and shelter workers hoped to move out 500 more today. The strategy is to keep Lamar-Dixon at “zero population growth,â€? balancing the numbers of animals coming in with those going out.
  • The Rumor: Thousands of dogs, cats, goats, horses, cows, etc. are dropping dead or stumbling around in Plaquemine Parish.
    • The Facts: VMAT teams and LSU groups in Plaquemine Parish, along with rescue groups from surrounding parishes, are delivering food and relocating some animals.

Converstion with Dr. Martha Littlefield, Assistant State Veterinarian

UPDATE re Littlefield, N.O. animal rescues
by Lavajunkie, 9/17/05 8:17 ET

posting as a favor:IMPORTANT UPDATE re Asst. State Veterinarian / N.O. animal rescuesI want everybody to know of a converstion I had late this afternoon (Friday, 9/16.) with Dr. Martha Littlefield, the Assistant State Veterinarian. She is the front-man in the rescue operations, working closely with the VMAT teams, La-SPCA and HUSA, and even the Mississippi state vet. This conversation ended a day of many TC’s and a few emails with state / government / private sector personnel, including several deans at the La School of Vet Med, the Area Emergency Coordinator (a vet (I think) from Utah volunteering his time,) the logistics coordinator for the US Dept of Agriculture, a gentleman at HUSA that works directly under Wayne Pacelle (who is back in La today,) and the Commissioner (top dog) of the Louisiana Dept of Agriculture and Forestry, the department under which the state vet operates.

To make a long (almost 30 minute conversation) story short, I found her to be of pleasant demeanor, courteous, and informative, as I did the others I spoke with today. She was exceptionally generous with her time. She has been receiving calls on her cell phone (it was published on the web, and yes I have it and her email, but no, I’m not distributing them) 24 hours a day. Many if not most of these calls are nasty, with people cursing at her. Such behavior is unbecoming the caller, and is NOT warranted.

I felt MUCH better about the rescue efforts after talking with her. And, I have complete confidence in what she told me.

The GOOD NEWS:

1.Hay and cat and dog food, along with water buckets, are now being dropped from helicopters into Plaquemines Parish. Much of the Parish is still not accessible by vehicle.

2.They are on the verge of opening two additional shelters; sites have been chosen, and now it is just the logistics of the paperwork, getting electricity turned on, etc. If I had to guess, I would think just a few days until there is substantially increased capacity for animal holding.

She explained to me the actions that were taken BEFORE Katrina hit, and gave me a history of the rescue operations, and also of the opening of the various shelters currently open.

She (along with the Commissioner) assured me that they have NEVER instituted or called for a 30 day quarantine. What they did do, was council with other vets / health personell who jointly decided that in order to protect the public health from possible epidemics (“possible because no one knows what bio-hazards most of these animals have been exposed to, and what diseases they may have aquired in their recent struggle – including those for which fleas and ticks, etc., are vectors) the animals should be held for 15 days, and if transported out of state, should be held for another 15 days, to allow time for owners to claim their pets. So the rumored 30 day quarantine is only a rumor, the 30 day period is to allow pets to be re-united with their owners. A good priority, I think.

Rescue personnel (not shelter / staging area workers) must be “credentialed by the Dept of Agriculture and Forestry. They want rescuers to have real animal experience to help ensure the safety of the people. She said (not an exact quote, but as close as I can recall) “If you’ve ever been on the other side of a dog fight, you know it’s somewhere you don’t want to be. (My note: Ever seen a pit bull in full-aggresion? They become single-minded, oblivious to commands and physical pain (such as hitting them with a stick to try to distract them.) They will only become distracted long enough to get rid of the irritation – as by biting their owner. I have seen one go through a plate-glass window to attack its litter-mate. And I’m not talking abut a dog trained / bed / raised for fighting – I’m talking about a pet, a sweet, loving pet who was raised with and loves cats, rabbits, you name it. It can be, in two words, terrifying / dangerous.) Dr. Littlefield went on to comment that ANY breed of dog can be dangerous; their most recent case of a dog killing a child was by a smaller breed (she told me, but I don’t remember the breed.) She herself is permanently scarred – from a bite from a small dog.

I implored her to write all that she told me, so the story would be complete. And from the source. She needs to confirm protocol (damn the red tape) but I am hopeful she will do so and distribute, which I offered to do for her.

She and her colleagues are NOT the enemy, I am convinced. People working with / under her have even saved mice!

The Dept of Ag is taking a terrible financial toll. History has proven that they will get little or no financial reimbursment from the Feds. I would like to suggest that after things calm down, we set up a fund spefically for that department. if each of the thousands of us contributed just a few dollars, we could substantially alleviate their financial troubles. And maybe consder doing the same for other departments and organizations

VOLUNTEERS - NEW 411
by AMTDC, 9/17/05 12:47 ET
Here's some good intell I got at my local Humane Society briefing
 this morning.

LSU (Parker Coliseum) is the central pet (and evacuee) shelter. From there food supplies are distributed out to the smaller shelter sites (THEY NEED DRIVERS, ANYONE WITH A CAR).

This is Lamar/Dixon:

An overview of the operations. Walk in volunteers are welcome: bring your OWN FOOD, OWN TENT, WATER IS FREE!

I have the phone number of the man running the LSU shelter. I, of course, cannot post, but would be happy to connect you with him....ONLY ONLY ONLY if you are planning to go down there. I cannot give it out for TO DOs (sorry).

My local group will be going down at various times between now and November. I plan to go 1-8 October. I am looking into flights, and will rent as big a car as I can.

If anyone wants more information, please email me: mailto:angie_tamburino@hotmail-dot-com
