No Animals Were to Leave LA at This Time
Date: Tue, 13 Sep 2005 00:56:44 -0000 From: "southern779" <southern779@yahoo-dot-com> Subject: Transport needed from every state I was told by a LSPCA volunteer at the Jefferson Command Post that NO animals were to leave LA at this time. Anyone coming to get them would be turned away. I spoke to her on Sunday. People want to come but they are being told not to by those in charge. I know of a Humane Society in Chattanooga ready to take a lot of animals right now. They have the vets waiting. I have been told that Atlanta has a huge facility set up ready for animals but none are allowed to leave. Atlanta has always been a big help to Florida hurrican pets but LA seems insistant on taking care of things in their pathetic sites. They want to bring volunteers down into disgusting conditions where they can't shower or even use a toilet rather than bringing the animals out of there to a good calming clean environment with adequate help. These places are willing to provide the quarantine time, foster and shelter these pets, post their pictures, handle their vet care, but no, LA has to follow their stupid rules. I am angry because animals are dying and volunteers and animals are having to be put through needless living conditions.

The authorities, who have been focusing on human rescues, are exhausted and don't appear to consider animal rescues a top priority. The facilities set aside for animal rescues are overloaded and cannot take more animals. Those trying to rescue animals trapped in homes are being dissuaded from attempting those rescues. We need to gather whatever energy we can and not let this story go by the wayside. CALL everyone you can. Don't let them forget this issue. If you can get down there, bring some animals to your local shelter. I don't understand why animals aren't being flown to other states by Continental -- I thought they said they would transport animals. There appear to be lots of foster homes, but no one coordinating transporting animals to these homes. If we let up now, it will mean some animals don't make it. Call, call, and call again. Don't let them forget that we are here. I'm calling everyone I can think of! Those animals are counting on us and we are running out of time. B. Thompson
RV's to Donate in LA or MS - Whiskers on Wheels (WOW)

We need one donated in the Puget Sound area to load up and take to the hurricane region or we need one donated in MS or LA where we could fly down and pick it up. We plan to set up an emerency mobile adoption center to take animals from the overloaded shelters in the disaster zone to outlying regions and adopt them out from stores such as Petco or Petsmart. This emergency vehicle would be set up based on our current mobile adoption program in Seattle. We would also transport pets back to Washington State to shelters and foster homes waiting to help out. Please visit http://www.whiskercity.com/ to view the WOW mobile adoption center and schedule. If you have an RV to donate for immediate use in the Hurricane region, please call Brenda at 206-250-3898. Thanks, WOW
U Say U Want 2 Help??
Date: Mon, 12 Sep 2005 22:00:32 -0000 From: "goldenretrescue" <mwilliamsCT@msn-dot-com> Subject: U Say U Want 2 Help?? Here's how: From the BestFriends front lines: You CAN get in along protected, non-flooded route to new staging area at Winn-Dixie. Directions below. Rescuers need crates, boats (inflatables needed to hold full crates on the water), people, trucks, SUVs and sticks with loops to get reluctant dogs! They need volunteers at the staging areas. Many dry areas where you can walk, just bring rubber boots! Many people are needed to get dogs off porches, etc. These are NOT the water dogs. Teams are getting those, too. These are sweet, docile, loving...one came in with pink bows still on her ears! Lots of sheps and pits, all friendly and well mannered. NEED RESCUE GROUPS to come get them. You CAN and WILL get in. See below. When leaving, take signs off of vehicle and follow route back out...cars, vans, trucks have left with dogs. Just don't tell that you are rescuing animals or they will make you take them to shelter. You were volunteering...now you're leaving. Period. ANYONE CAN GET IN TO N.O. TO HELP!!! But MUST follow these directions. This comes directly from two rescuers with BESTFRIENDS who are there - and need more rescuers and helpers. 1) Have magnetic sign printed at Kinkos (or any copy store) for both sides of your vehicle. It doesn't matter if it's an SUV or VW Beetle or refrig big rig… it should read: DISASTER RELIEF ANIMAL RESCUE BEST FRIENDS.ORG (or PET SUPPLIES PLUS or your organization) 2) At Nat'l Guard checkpoints, they WILL wave you through if you have these signs.( If you are stopped for some reason, you are working with BestFriends at 4600 Chef Menteur Hwy staging area at N. Louisa Street.) ** The Guard has been very rescue friendly and just want to know that you are legit. 3) DIRECTIONS TO STAGING: -- Take I-12 E (from Hammond) towards N.O and I-10. -- Around Covington LA, take US Hwy 190 South, which takes you to N. Causeway Blvd and the bridge over Lake Ponchatrain into N.O. Be sure to stay on Causeway Blvd to go over bridge! You will be in Metarie once over the bridge. -- Stay on S. Causeway Blvd. all the way to Jefferson Hwy, 90 E. (You will cross over Veterans Blvd) -- Stay on Jeff Highway east to N.O. until it turns into S. Claiborne Ave. At this point -- Take a right on Monticello Ave, which turns into (dead ends) @ Oak St. Go left on Oak. -- Bear right on Leake Ave. (You will be paralleling the MS river) -- Stay on Leake for 10 or so blocks and then take a left onto St. Charles Ave. -- Continue past Tulane on your left, Audubon Park on your right. -- Cross over Napoleon and Louisiana Aves. -- Stay on St. Charles until you dead end and -- Follow signs to reach I-10 E. (i.e. go left at the end of St. Charles) -- Take I-10 E to Louisa St N (the 2nd exit). -- Go left on Louisa. -- Go through several red lights to Chef Menteur Hwy and go right. -- Immediately see Winn-Dixie on right in the first block. -- Pull in the parking lot and help!

Call LA State Veterinarian
Date: Mon, 12 Sep 2005 21:15:11 -0000 From: "patti_orth" <pattib@frii-dot-com> Subject: Call LA State Veterinarian Seems to me that one of the major issues at the moment is not being able to move animals out of LA to other shelters so new rescues can be brought in. I suggest calling the state verterinarian and letting him know this is unacceptable and while rules have there reasons there are times to break the rules. As far as I can find out this is the person to contact: Maxwell Lea, Jr., D.V.M. State Veterinarian Office of Animal Health Services P.O. St Bernard Parish, Dr. White Needs Help Rescuing Animals
Date: Mon, 12 Sep 2005 20:31:57 -0000 From: "mariontl" <mariontl@telus-dot-net> Subject: Dr. White Needs Help Rescuing Animals in St Bernard Parish! CROSS POSTING: TIME IS RUNNING OUT !!!! Dr. Eric White, a veterinarian from New Iberia, LA, has been traveling to St. Bernard Parish, a place completely devastated by Katrina, on his own time and dime to try to save as many animals as possible. He has been going back and forth and already brought back to New Iberia a lot of pets he already rescued. THEY ARE THOUSANDS MORE ROAMING PETS IN ST. BERNARD PARISH. Time is running short as AN ORDER TO SHOOT the animals has already been given and as the Parish will be completely CLOSED OFF shortly (within a few days) for maybe up to 6 months. No pets will be allowed out of there then. A barn in Chalmette has been made available to Dr. White where he can shelter the animals he saved, thus saving precious time, but panels are needed to build temporary fenced kennels. He has made arrangements with T & S Milling in New Iberia to get the panels he needs and will be picking them up tonight. Please call T & S Milling or Acadiana Pet Spa (Dr. White's vet. hospital) to make donations towards the purchase of these panels. T & S Milling: (337) 365-7007 Acadiana Pet Spa: (337) 560-0003 Eventually, these pets will need to be placed in shelters or foster homes until they can possibly be reunited with their owners, and foster homes will be greatly needed. Please contact us if you think you can help. Thank you so much for caring, Marie Bossard 337-879-6600 337-277-9538 St. Martin Humane Society http://www.stmartinhumane.org/

This week's goal will be temporary housing. At this time he is requesting
assistance in funding rescue efforts - specifically:
For Tuesday they need about $1,200 of materials for immediate needed
