Subject: Update on the Pasado's Pit Bulls

All of the animal aggressive pit bulls that needed a new shelter have been relocated. Here is the updates from Pasado's website http://www.pasadosafehaven.org/NEWS/NEWS2.htm

More Hurricane Katrina dogs find a future!

Although Hurricane Katrina seems like a lifetime away, we're still helping many of the 1200 animals Pasado's Safe Haven rescued with heartworm treatment, spays and neuters. We've been flying animals back to their owners weekly.

One of our biggest challenges was to place pitbulls who we rescued, whose owners we have not located. Since Pasado's Safe Haven was never built to house dogs in kennels (all of our rescued animals share free-ranging areas) we needed help. And pitbulls, who haven't been brought up with the nicest of manners, needed rehabilitating by people who are knowledgeable with this breed.

Thankfully, we found angels to help.

Of all the pitbulls who came to Pasado's, seven could not be placed with their original owners, despite heroic efforts. So, to the rescue came three awesome groups: Sarah Inc. in Alabama, Spindletop Rescue in Texas, which specializes in pits, and Charley's Strays in Maine. All three groups will provide individual training and rehabilitation. Our seven pits flew to their new homes (above) this week.

Many thanks to Cascade Kennels for housing many of our Katrina rescues when we didn't have the kennels to care for them. To Mark, Pasado's co-founder, who worked weekends and nights to find the proper placement for them. Claudia and Donna who are tireless advocates for the animals. And Stealth Volunteers for continuing to search for their owners and never give up. And lastly, to all the New Orleans rescuers who saved the lives of all the animals rescued from Hurricane Katrina. You are our heroes!

Meet the Hurricane Katrina dogs, living at Pasado's, who are ready for homes here http://www.pasadosafehaven.org/KATRINA/KATRINADOGS/KatrinaDogs.htm !

Cameron Parish cattle and horses need your help

URGENT: Cameron Parish cattle and horses need your help

URGENT:

Around 250 horses and 2,500 head of cattle are still in need of Hay and Feed and supplies.

These are animals in Cameron Parish in SW Louisiana--areas which were severely damaged by the winds and storm surge generated by Hurricane Rita. This relatively sparsely populated rural parish has received scant media and governmental attention compared to more populous areas such as New Orleans and neighboring parishes. The damage here was just as critical, however.

Whole towns have been decimated, some may not be allowed to rebuild. "Old-timers compare the devastation to that of Hurricane Audrey, which hit in 1957 and killed over 600 people. "People from the coastal towns have been kept out for months.

Cameron Parish is the largest Louisiana Parish, with one of the smallest populations. There are no incorporated communities! Unfortunately, the state system is geared toward the number of 'voters'. You have heard the famous story of the boxcar of donated hay sent to be split between Cameron Parish and Vermilion Parish, that some how mysteriously ended up being unloaded near New Orleans!

Cattle were swept over 20 miles inland on the surge. To get an idea of what happened to the cattle, read what happened to the grave caskets: "The surge actually lifted some vaults, which can weigh as much as 6,500 pounds, out of the ground and swept some caskets 25 miles inland." [1] (http://www.statesman.com/life/content/life/stories/other/01/8ritagraves.html) To add to the difficulties of pasture recovery, ranchers are not being allowed to burn the debris off their pasture land, which is necessary to uncover and open up the ground for spring growth. The delay is because there are bodies scattered from the coffins, blasted open during the storm, entangled in the debris. The recovery and reburial of bodies is painful, tedious and very time-consuming, and unfortunately, the ranchers must wait.

Cameron Parish cattle are run together in the coastal marsh areas - no fencing. (Almost half of Cameron Parish's acreage is water area.) They are rounded up basically twice a year. After Rita, when ALL fencing was destroyed, the cattle had to be driven up out of the marshes to higher land and into pens, where they could be held, fed and given fresh water. This has been a herculean task. Cattle had to be identified, and owners who could afford to, have moved their cattle north of the coast where there is some winter grazing. Many owners have not been heard from, or have no means to move their cattle. These people have no facilities to hold their own cattle, as they are traditionally run on the open marshes.

It has been difficult to get supplies directly in to Cameron Parish. We have been purchasing feed from a LA feed mill, and having it delivered directly to the areas where the cattle were being held. That has been hard, as large orders need to be purchased to make it worthwhile. Donations to this devastated area have always been hard to solicit, because there has been NO publicity for this Parish that has lost SO much. Also, there were no welfare organizations for animals or people in place.

Feed will go directly to the animals that are still gathered out of the marshes and to the ranchers struggling to maintain them. They desperately need hay/feed to make it until the spring grass starts growing. The larger producers have moved their cattle north out of the area.

The horses that they are struggling to maintain, are the hard working animals that have had to do the work of moving, holding and sorting the cattle, much of this in deep water. This has been, and continues to be, an incredibly hard time for them. They deserve our help.

Any donations are tax-deductible.

PLEASE contact Marnie Reeder, to coordinate deliveries of HAY, FEED and/or supplies. She can be reached at <starbright60 @webtv .net> and 512 -288 -4480/288 -0068.

PLEASE lets get help to these animals.

[stealthvolunteers] Need help - especially in Chicago area re Vermilion Parish

I've cross posted below, regarding Vermilion Parish, which is west of NO. Please at least check out the link and view the video.

They very much need farm animal supplies, tools, vet meds, etc. They've been donated the use of a warehouse and the warehouse workers for one week, as well as a 14 foot flatbed truck, complete with driver, who will take a load of supplies down to Vermilion Parish next weekend. But they have no supplies to put on the truck!

They are desperate for help obtaining supplies by next weekend. I have emailed 23 companies, which I've listed after the cross post to avoid duplication. IF ANY OF YOU HAVE SOME TIME TO GOOGLE COMPANIES AND SEND AN EMAIL REQUESTING DONATED SUPPLIES BEFORE NEXT WEEKEND, WE DESPERATELY NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE! They also need volunteers in the Chicago area to pick up supplies and take to the warehouse.

Also, 3,400 bales of desperately needed hay have been donated from Mocksville, NC but weeks hav passed and they still haven't found anyone that will transport the hay down to them. Half is to go to Mississippi, the other half to Vermilion Animal Aid. If anyone has some connections to a truck/driver or other form of transport that can even take some of the hay, it would be so appreciated!

Here's the cross-post:

Our most urgent project: As you know, transport has been a huge challenge for everyone since the storms. We have been informed that someone in the Arlington Heights area (NW suburb of Chicago) is willing to provide warehouse space from now until March 3rd for any supply donations that we can secure in the area. In addition, this generous donor is willing to drive the supplies to us shortly afterwards!

What we need:

1. Volunteers to solicit for supplies in the Chicago area until March 3rd. Due to the short amount of time frame to work within, we sure could use all the help we can get to maximize this wonderful opportunity given to us. We have exactly 6 days to accomplish this and fill a 14' flat bed truck. (Suggestions: stockyards, local businesses, manufacturers in the area, local rescue groups, family/friends in the area who have items to donate, local Red Cross or Salvation Army in the area, etc...) Please note that you do not have to live in the Chicago area to do this. We've had success in e-mailing the donor then follow-up with a phone call a day or two later.

2. We need volunteers who live in the area who can pick up the donated goods and deliver to the warehouse - if needed. If there is anyone who lives in this area, I would love to have their contact number/e-mail addy if they are willing to help in this capacity. Please have them contact me directly at <innn65 @yahoo .com>

Time frame: Now until March 3rd (Friday) 6 days total

Location: Arlington Heights, a suburb on the NW side of Chicago.

Supplies we need:

small animal supplies (dogs, cats, chickens, goats, etcÂ…)
large animal supplies (horses, cattle)
people supplies (anything except clothes)

For a comprehensive supplies needed list refer to this link: http://www.vermilionanimalaid.org/supplies.html

Donations should be IN BOXES (unless it's big/bulky items like shovel, tools, fencing material? ) We are a nonprofit group so if donors need a tax receipt, please have them contact us at Annmcm111@charter.net and innn65@yahoo.com for a donation form that must be filled out AND it must accompany the package.

Transport info: The trailer is a 14' flatbed. There is a big shrink wrap machine available so boxes can be stacked and wrapped then tied down on pallets.

Drop off location:

Small items ONLY please:

Marriott Courtyard
3700 N. Wilke Road
Arlington Heights, IL 60004
Leave at the front desk marked "attn. VON GAHLEN"

Large items or other items:

Our supplies drop off contact in the area is Karen Coulter at 706 695 -4994 or <kmcoulter @charter .net>. Please have donors call her to arrange a drop off time. She will then notify the guys at the warehouse what to expect and when.

Please note that these guys are working at their jobs so they are doing us a favor in accepting these supplies. This is why we need to arrange a drop off time first.

Their working hours are: M-F 6AM - 6PM

warehouse location:

3405 Ridge Ave
Arlington Heights, IL 60004
NOTE: Please do not have donors deliver supplies without contacting karen first.

Any problems or questions please contact Ann and Lisa at both these addresses:

Ann: <Annmcm111 @charter .net> (805) 481 -4472
Lisa: <innn65 @yahoo .com>

OK, June. Let us know if any of this is doable for you or the stealth group. Thank you so much for your offer to help!

Lisa
