New Orleans 1000's Need Food Water, Only 5 Volunteers Today

NEW ORLEANS 1000's NEED FOOD WATER, Only 5 Volunteers Today
Animal Rescue New Orleans
http://www.animalrescueneworleans.com/

PLEASE CROSSPOST FAR AND WIDE... URGENT

THE STARVING ANIMALS OF HURRICANE KATRINA NEED YOU NOW

Today in New Orleans we had ONLY FIVE PEOPLE to feed the THOUSANDS of Katrina animals who remain on the streets.

These animals are trying to stay alive long enough for their people to return or to be rescued.

Animal Rescue New Orleans http://www.animalrescueneworleans.com/ has mapped OVER 2,800 Food/Water locations that need to be refilled!

MOST Food/Water stations are not refilled for over a WEEK because we don't have enough people to feed the animals.

THE ANIMALS ARE STARVING AGAIN.

Two more emaciated dogs came in yesterday....

PLEASE GO FEED THE STARVING ANIMALS.

If you can't go yourself, then help spread the word that we need more volunteers.

Crosspost far and wide......URGENT

If you go down to help support ARNO's Food/Water program don't let

ANYTHING or ANYONE stand in your way.

PLEASE DON'T STAY AT THE SHELTER

GO OUT AND FEED THE ANIMALS THAT HAVE NOT YET BEEN RESCUED.

The animals who are NOT in the shelter need you MORE than the animals in the shelter.

The shelter animals are fed every day but the thousands of animals on the street may eat ONLY ONCE A WEEK!!

PLEASE GO FEED THE STARVING ANIMALS.

They need you. The animals need you to go work hard to get them fed.

To work a 12-14 hour day......

to refill over 100 Food/Water stations a day.

It's the only way we can keep them alive.

We used to keep them well-fed.

Now we are struggling just to keep them ALIVE.

PLEASE GO FEED THE STARVING ANIMALS who are living under homes.

Permission to crosspost far and wide!!

For more information on how to help the thousands of Katrina animals, please visit the: Animal Rescue New Orleans website: http://www.animalrescueneworleans.com/

THANK YOU for anything you can do to help the innocent victims of Katrina.

(Please do not reply to this email)

1/14/06: From Jane: We just rescued James, a DECLAWED indoor cat who has made it this long!!! His guardian was so excited that she met the trapper at her house instead of even taking the cat to Celebration Station! When the woman called me 2 nights ago I sent someone right out. The thought of a declawed cat on the street was killing me. Hurray!!! The trapper said that James was one of the most freaked out cats she ever trapped. He was REALLY scared and upset in the trap. She transferred him into a carrier in a closed car to make sure he did not get away. As soon as his mommy showed up he started rolling on his back in the carrier stretching his paws to her!!! He clearly was happy to see her! She was THRILLED to have him back! She called to ask me what she owed us for doing this. I told her to give him more love and attention for the rest of his life and pass the word to people not to give up on their cats.

1/6/06: WANTED: Your Time & Heart For Hurricane Animals Your 2006 Resolution? Volunteer For Hurricane Animal Rescue!

We're in NOLA for the animals through January, into February, at which time we'll update you. There are still thousands more out there. Animals around corners. In sewers. On ledges. In the woods.

They struggle to survive in a desolate, unstable environment that lacks usual food sources such as good Samaritan feedings or garbage output. Many of these animals languish in low populated areas slated for demolition. In addition, new litters exacerbate the problem tremendously...

Please make a New Year's resolution to volunteer your time and heart for animals in New Orleans.

David Meyer, Pia Salk, Jane Garrison, Jessica Higgins, and Eric Rice

WE NEED MANY MORE VOLUNTEERS FOR:

1.) FOOD/WATER TEAMS: Responsible for keeping animals alive until they can be trapped. Does not require any specialized skills...just compassion and will!
2.) ON-SITE ANIMAL CAREGIVERS: Volunteers for animal care/socialization, dog walking, cleaning cages, animal intake, etc. We're not kidding. We REALLY need people now to work on-site at CS. Also looking for strong men or women able to lift/carry food pallets and other bulky supplies.
3.) TRAPPING TEAMS: ACOs, DVMs, Vet Techs or Experienced Humane Trappers. Encouraged to spend at least one week in New Orleans.
4.) RESCUE TEAMS: Rescue animals described in calls to our dispatch number as "animals in need." Teams also comb city to pick up street animals who approach them without need to trap. Animal handling experience necessary.
5.) ADMINISTRATIVE: On-site volunteers needed to help track animals, record identity information, do data entry and photography, answer phones. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their laptops. You need Wifi and Excel.
6.) TRANSPORTS: Essential for streamlining the daily flow of both animals and supplies in/out of Celebration Station. Anyone who can rent or bring their own mini-van, SUV, or truck is appreciated!
7.) ON-SITE VET TECHS & VETERINARY ASSISTANTS: Your expertise needed to assist with intake/assessment of new arrivals and ongoing animal care. Submit a volunteer form: http://www.bestfriends.org/HF/VL.cfm

HOW TO VOLUNTEER FOR ARNO:

If you have firm arrive/depart dates, and do not hear from us immediately after sending info required below, PLEASE GO. Due to email volume, we cannot always respond quickly-but have recorded your information for dispatch.

1. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT US UNTIL YOU KNOW YOUR ARRIVE/DEPART DATES.

2. Send volunteer info, as requested below, to: Brenda Shoss: mailto:info@kinshipcircle-dot-org (@kinshipcircle.org) or mailto:kinshipcircle@brick-dot-net (@brick.net) OR Kate: mailto:katedanaher@animalearthhuman-dot-org (@animalearthhuman.org)

PLEASE EMAIL ONE OR THE OTHER, NOT BOTH. SEND ONE TIME ONLY.

Duplicates are slowing down volunteer intake.
  • Full name / Name of organization (if applicable):
  • Street, city, state, zip:
  • Cell phone, land phone:
  • Email address:
  • Brief description of experience working with animals:

Everything was either adopted or pulled...leaving to go to Prairieville, so I will recap later. It was a fiasco, I can tell you, but they are all out. PLEASE, anybody who frequents NOLA or ssp.com, the Mal is being taken off of petfinder by me in a minute and moved to HAPPY TAILS. It might not show, because I have to delete some old ones. The site will only hold 502. Also, to see the cats, go to Happy Tails, go to your browser window, change the word dogs to cats...don't know why, just is. I will get a jillion emails asking why we killed the Malinois. I currently have 2658 emails in my in box and that is from about 2 weeks. I must have gotten 10 within 5 minutes asking me not to kill Buddy. Poor Buddy was going to ARF from the beginning if not adopted. He was adopted by 10AM. and taken off Petfinder. This stuff is not real great for my moral(know how the shelter employees feel), plus it takes up time I don't have. So THE BELGIAN MALANOIS IS RESCUED BY GRASS ROOTS. EVERYTHING SAFE....NEW ANIMALS UP TONIGHT IF I SURVIVE TILL THEN.

Thanks, everybody.

Alert - possible organized group stealing pets in New Orleans

Subject: Alert - possible organized group stealing pets in New Orleans
Forum: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LouisianaDogCatRescu/

In the last few days I have seen some disturbing posts on Nola.com and in Craigslist about dogs going missing in New Orleans. It looks like there may be an organized group going around and perhaps stealing pets. This is very disturbing in the light of the knowledge that there are dog-fighters operating in the area.

The first post is from a person in Uptown that I contacted when he posted his missing Border Collie in Craigslist. I gave him the ARNO/Celebration Station details, and he kept in touch.

Yesterday, he sent the following message:

Dublin has been FOUND. She was rescued on Sunday and taken to a Vet's office in Metairie. I received a call this afternoon. She had a rough week. Apparently she got attacked by another dog/animal. She lost her tail, had several puncture wounds, and is bruised all over her body.
BUT she is going to be ok. Thank you

Next post from Nola.com

35703. Lost Chihuahua-Gretna by jbwall, 1/25/06 956 ET
Our pet chihuahua Bessie escaped from our yard around 3:00 p.m yesterday.
She was in the fenced yard for 15 minutes and found a hole. A neighbor said he saw a man in a pickup catch her in front of the TK Market on 5th Street in Gretna near Stumpf. She is Tan, tall and thin and weighs about 5 lbs.
Please call if you have any info or if you are the one who took her. We love her so much and will pay a reward. If you have any info please call 366-7830 or 214-1448. Thank you.

Another post from Nola.com:

35685. Does anyone know about the dog theives in river ridge? by Twlight, 1/25/06 220 ET
I have had 3 people come to my door DEMANDING I show them papers on my dog. I immediatly slammed the door on the last two. The first one I calmly explained to them that Isabelle is my dog and not newly "acquired". I am posting this as the police sweep my neighbor hood for the zealot who wont listen and tried to STEAL my dog. I was woke from a sound sleep by Isabelle baying like crazy and jumped up to see what on earth could be the problem. She was huddled by my front door off her lead and terrified. It took me 10 minutes for my son to calm her down as I investigated. At first I thought she had just broke her lead again, since she was by the front door and not in the yard where she belongs. I walked into my 6 ft privacy fenced yard just in time to be pushed down as person pushed by me and escaped. I thought maybe a burglar until I was setting Isabelle in for the night and discovered that her lead had been UNHOOKED from her coller and hooked back on it self. So that tells me the intruder was after her and not my junk inside.
I posted here as a warning to overzealous "rescuers" to stay away. Next time I shoot and dump the body in the river. Which is only 2 houses down from me.

It looks from the last post above that perhaps these dog-stealers are masquerading as pet rescuers. What an ideal cover for them, as they go around in their vans. I have seen people post messages that are very antagonistic towards Pet Rescue, but maybe their views can be explained by these experiences.

Help W/National Push For Publicity on Tuesday, Jan 31

Please cross-post- this will help all pets at all shelters get adopted!

Celebration Station, the Best Friends temporary holding facility in New Orleans is full to capacity. They cannot save more animals off the streets until they free up cage space, so 1-800-Save-A-Pet.com and Best Friends is launching a major Katrina-based media push on Tuesday (Operation Save A Pet Katrina) to try to get all pets at all shelters adopted to make space so shelters can take in and house more Katrinas. This will use the Katrina issue (which the media is interested in) to promote adoptions of ALL pets at ALL shelters and rescues. Official media events will be held in Los Angeles and New Orleans, but if you or your group wants to get some of this publicity locally and help spread the word, below is press release you can edit and send out Monday in advance of an event on Tuesday. GO FOR IT!

LETS HAVE EVENTS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ON TUESDAY AND MAKE SPACE FOR MORE RESCUES, AND LET'S GET THE MEDIA FOCUSSED ON THE BIGGER PICTURE FOR ALL HOMELESS PETS. It's easy. Just take 1 hour and call and get fax #s or e-mails for the programming/planning desks at your local TV, radio and newspapers. Fax the alert below on Monday publicizing a "press conference" on Tuesday at a local shelter, rescue or park. Bring some pets for adoption- (maybe with bandanas- that will give a good visual to get you on TV) and get a few articulate people to talk about:

  • The need to adopt all pets from all shelters to save those pets
  • Adopting any pet makes space for more Katrina rescues.
  • Point people to www.OperationSaveAPetKatrina.com and your own website and you will be a part of the national effort.

Please let David Meyer (davidm@1-800-Save-A-Pet.com) know immediately if you plan to do this so we can include your city in our media materials! Here is a sample press release you can use:

"Tens of thousands of family pets left homeless by Katrina and Rita are facing hunger, still wandering near their destroyed homes, and have no one to feed or care for them," says YOUR NAME, President of NAME OF YOUR GROUP, "A crucial link in the rescue chain has broken because we have few places around the country left to send these pets, so we need people to adopt any pet from their local shelter to help make more space. We want people to know they can be a link in this chain of life. People can see online photos of pets to adopt and they can spread the word by sending a link to Operation-Save-A-Pet-Katrina.com to their friends. They can be the link and send the link that saves a life."

This effort supports hundreds of private and public animal shelters and humane organizations in a race against time, as pets permanently separated from their owners fall victim to hunger and disease on the streets of New Orleans. Many are now reproducing, creating a potentially catastrophic numbers of stray animals in these devastated areas. The public is being directed to pet adoption websites such as NAME OF YOUR WEBSITE, http://www.1-800-Save-A-Pet.com/ and http://www.OperationSaveAPetKatrina.com/ to promote pet adoption so the rescue efforts can continue.
