What's going on?

Many web sites offer help to rescuers, shelters, and disaster survivors to report and search for lost or found pets. This maze of information creates difficulty for people trying to locate missing pets - they need to search dozens of separate databases and message forums.

This project is planning a centralized repository, where someone can search the data from all of these at one time. When information is not in the central repository, Animal Finder Information Formatted AFIF messages will allow the various web sites/databases to share information so that multiple searches can be consolidated.

How is this happening?

Data will be collected from unstructured forum posts by the volunteer data entry crew here, and "scraped" from more structured databases by volunteer programmers.

In addition, a standard data format is being planned to assist with sharing data among existing pet/animal databases. This new animal finder interchange format AFIF is using the People Finder Interchange Format PFIF as a model.
