Funding Proposal Discussion

Kieran of this community, suggested we consider immediate funding opportunities to provide further resources for this project (post notes)

Jon's suggestion is to clean up our current implementation and to make a plan forward in order to provide us with better chances of success, Please consider/comment/add to the points below

More Presentable Work Product

  • Cleaner database (please specify a description/process)
  • Add mechanism for data analysis (specify process/output)
  • Produce an outline of permanent project goals and organisation,
  • Focus on marketing side, so that PeopleFinder can be established as first port of call
  • Develop an interface to facilitate collecting data directly rather than scraping from other sources.
  • Discuss what kind of organization we can create, manage and sustain to support such a project,
  • Exploration of potential applications other than disaster response.
  • Develop a privacy policy
  • Document plan and organization concept
  • Solicit contributors committment as far as organizers/fundraisers/marketing is concerned
  • Increase user documentation for site administrators and potential volunteers

Another Perspective: Let's ground this drive for finances within this effort upon transactions and investments as benchmarks to progress.

As money enters the discussion, two pressing questions need to be taken head on. What about investments and what about transactions?

If a viable case for money exists, it needs to hinge upon real-world factors and economics. A start-up needs clear purpose. Otherwise, the start-up of a financed effort might be best served in back-burner ambitions of a few. It might be better to leave well enough alone and huddle again in earnest when the next crisis hits. Progess can occur among volunteers, with public officials, and with established agencies and service providers -- rather than with a financed Katrinia-whatever venture.
Explain the justifications in terms of investments and transations) for the creation of an enterprise with financial foundation -- rather than a volunteer-enabled foundation.

Investments

Certain assets have to be obtained, and some can only be secured and protected with cash. Other assets can come from in-kind efforts. When boiled down, what can't flow to the project without money?

Unless pressing identified expenses can be itemized, then it might be silly to try to talk about making these efforts a viable, financial interest.

Transactions

Transactions can be with buyer and sellers trading goods and services for money. However, many transactions can occur among givers and takers that don't impact upon one's wallet.

Getting money into a venture needs to bring serious benefits to the transactions within the operations.

Where are the bottlenecks? Can money pave the way to cover those hurdles, or not?

Possible Transactions that only money can bring

  • printed handbooks and tip sheets for survivors, printed by the tens of thousands.
  • hand-held field computers for uploading info from survivors in times of no electricity or cell serivce.
  • local, wireless networks, genrator or solar powered with connections to satellites as field IT centers with open-source utilities.
  • fulltime staff to coordinate volunteers and lead training efforts.
  • just one or many colocated servers on the internet that are permanent and reliable
